Beacanpaw stalked through the ferns, grinding his teeth in frustration. He felt a mixed up wave of emotion crash down on him. He loved Fernpelt so much! Or did he? Was he being stupid? He was... He could tell. Stupid, stupid little Beacanpaw, Aspenkit had always been the better son. Beacanpaw hissed in fury and slashed at towering spruce, chopping it in half. The tom staggered to the bank of the large pool the water from the Serenity Falls ruhed into. He looked up at the huge silver waterfall, and a tear slid down his cheek. He shook it away, peering down into the water. A fish flashed past and he darted a paw at it ungracefully, The fish darted away and Beacanpaw toppled into the water. The water was shallow but it still froze him to the core. The little tom pulled himself from the wet and shook the water from his pelt.

Gillpaw, heading to the Cascade Rocks, ran by, only to com to a skidding stop three tail lengths away. "What's wrong, Becanpaw?" he asked, rushing up to his friend.

Beacanpaw jumped as Gillpaw rushed up to him. His short tan-coloured fur bristled and he swung around to glare at his ambusher. He relaxed when he recognized his friend, his fur flattening and his yellow eyes clearing. "I... I dunno," he mewed quietly, scuffing his paws in the dust.

"Are you sure?" He asked, "You seem sad."

"I'm fine," insisted Beacanpaw, shaking himself. "You should get on with our assesment. We're not meant to talk."

"That's true. See you around!" He called as he continued his run to his place.

Fernpelt stalked after the apprentices, silent as she crawled through the undergrowth. She saw the two apprentices talking, and wondered why they weren't doing what they had been assigned to do. Then they parted, and carried on their task. Beacanpaw looked wet, she noticed, and wondered what had happened to him.

Beacanpaw looked around rapidly to check that Gillpaw had really gone. Then he continued to search for prey. A jay landed on a low branch and began to sing merrily. Beacanpaw launched himself into the air far too soon. His claws snagged in the bird's tail feathers as it took flight in terror. Beacanpaw clutched desperately at his prey, but the bird's feathers began to slip out, and he fell with a soft thump to the ground. Dusty and angry, Beacanpaw rolled onto his paws. He prayed that Spicetalon or Fernpelt was not watching him at the moment.

Gillpaw continued on, searching for prey. His big amber eyes fell onto a rabbit. He swiftly caught and buried it. He continued on.

Scarletpaw was crouched low to the ground, eyes wide. There was a rustling in the undergrowth, and it sounded larger than a mouse or a rabbit. She slunk through the bushes, and peered around a large hanging vine. She saw Gillpaw, that must have been the rustling, and seeing as the wind was blowing the wrong way she couldn't have smelled him. 'Hi Gillpaw. How're you getting on?' she asked, glad for a quick rest. She had caught a lot of prey and was pretty tired.
