Mottledkit stepped blearily into the nuresery, head swimming. She had already spent most of her day with Littlefox, learning what herbs cured what ailing cats. She was glad to have been preocupied, but now, as she yawned widely, longed only for her foster mum and best friend, Littleheart and Yewkit.
Of course, as soon as she tucked her paws beneath her, she was asleep. Her mother's soft, lxorious fur conformted her as she drifted into the abyss of her dreams.
She was sitting on a huge rock, bigger than any she'd ever incountered. Mist engulfed all things withing four tail-lengths. It was chilly, the air was sharp. Mottledkit found it hard to breathe. As she looked around, startled, a shape materialized in the mist.
"I am Rivermagic, son of Shadestar." It was a silver tabby tom-cat, eyes gleaming in eagerness, as if he had been expecting her. Mottledkit shrank back from him, flattening her ears. Rivermagic only laughed, and in such a way that suddenly, Mottledkit wasn't as afraid. She straightened a little bit, and in a small voice, questioned him. "Are you.. dead?" Rivermagic went serious. "Yes, I am. You should not share what I am about to tell you with any cat except your medicine cat, unless she says so. Understood, young one?" Mottledkit nodded meekly. "Understood." The silver tom smiled at her and sat in front of her. "Good, then listen closely:" He meowed. His eyes were glowing so iridescently that Mottledkit found it painful to stare into them, but squinted, focusing better. "You must go where the sun shines white hot
Where the land melts from the sun's heat
But where everything is bitterly cold.
Where water is never ending
and where prey are the predators
only then will the nightmare become
myth once again." Mottledkit looked at him, puzzled, and tilted her head. "Wha-?" She was cut off, as Rivermagic had begun to fade silently away into the mist, leaving her alone.
Mottledkit screeched as he claws were ripped off of the rock and she was lifted into the air. The light was blinding now and a high pitched buzzing was sounding close in her ears.
She awoke, panting heavily. It had been a dream. Quietly, she left her mother's side and trotted out of the nursery, heading to find Littlefox.
