Hickorypaw
I've been awake for a while now You've got me feelin' like a child now
'Cause every time I see your bubbly face I get the tinglies in a silly place
Jaws parted wide in a yawn, whiskers twitched. Slate blue eyes blinked open sleepily, and tender paws flexed. She stretched one muscle at a time before finally lifting herself to her feet and dragging herself from the apprentices' den. Her sleep had been far from peaceful. It was filled with memories, flashbacks of her young kithood. The hunger, and her brush with death. How could a mother be so cruel?
That was Hickorypaw's difference between most or all of the other apprentices. Their mothers had loved them. Maple had found her to be a waste of time. Looking at Kinkajoupaw and his siblings, she saw that Petaldance loved them more than anything. They had been lovingly nurtured, good and healthy. Their mother would be ruined if one of them died. But not Hickorypaw's mother. She hated her daughter so much that she tried to kill her herself.
Kinkajoupaw...
Thinking about him and his siblings had led her to think about, well, him. Her best friend, her only real friend. Sure, she'd been out hunting and training with her mentor, Rippedear, a good few times. But even so, she didn't really know the older she-cat very well. Even though she'd only met Kinkajoupaw in late kithood, which was but a few moons ago, she felt like she could tell him anything that she felt. Anything except...
That feeling that she got around him. It was strange, almost sickening, yet comforting in a way. It grew with every passing day, every time she saw him, every time that she was deprived from him. Hickorypaw was barely grasping exactly what the stomach churning was caused by. But she couldn't believe it, she couldn't believe herself. She was far too young for such a thing, for a crush...
Hickorypaw couldn't help but look for him, or at least see if he was in the clearing as well. He didn't appear to be. Perhaps he was still asleep? Or maybe he was already out training with Wintersand? Trying to distract herself, she took a mouse from the fresh-kill pile and began to eat it, little by little. Again, she glanced around. Was he here?

kinkajoupaw The young tom's paws pattered the rough grass. Kinkajoupaw was padding back to camp, his head held high. A small mouse hung from between his teeth - the first prey he had ever caught alone. He knew that he wasn't as good at hunting as his sisters and brothers, but for now he clung to the small glow of pride in his belly. The small tabby trotted into the clearing of the EclipseClan camp, the grass evening out and becoming flat and downtrodden. Kinkajoupaw padded to the fresh kill pile, and placed his mouse on top very carefully, his tail quivering with pride. When the young tom turned, he spotted Hickorypaw. He headed towards his best friend, his large blue eyes wider than ever. "Hi, H-Hickorypaw!" he trilled. He still had not lost his trademark stutter. "D-did you see? I c-c-caught a mouse! All b-by myself!"
The tom blinked at her happily. He felt as though he had known her all his life. She was not like Lilapaw or Grebepaw, whom he dearly loved, but different. Lilapaw and Grebepaw were his sisters. This was something entirely different, something new. She was the first proper friend he had ever had, and it felt good. "So, wh-what have y-you b-been d-d-doing today, then?"

StarClan had answered her plea. In came Kinkajoupaw, proudly carrying a mouse and carefully placing it on the fresh-kill pile. Hickorypaw grinned as he approached, waving her tail in delight. She could tell how happy he was, and she was happy for him. The white-and-silver tabby knew how much this meant to him, as he was often seen as the weakest of his litter, the runt. But that wouldn't cause her to push him aside. He was her best friend, and she would promote that. "Hi, Kinkajoupaw!" she purred. "Congratulations!" She blinked at his question. She'd been thinking about him...but she couldn't say that. It felt embarrassing. "Nothing, really. I just woke up a few minutes ago." Realizing how late she'd slept in, she grinned sheepishly.
