The sun was sinking in the sky, dying the clouds dirty rogue and lilac. The bright hot ball winked at the world with its flaming face, before ducking behind a cloud. Night had not yet set in, so the pastel streaked sky provided light for the warm forest. Green shoots had begun to sprout from the earth, and tall, thin saplings and pushed their way up and out of the moist soil. The heat was not smothering, yet retained a light, dancing gentleness that caressed a chill cat's body with its warmed fingers.
Amethyststar sat outside her den, her deep amber eyes following the progress of the sun as it drifted behind the violet-splattered cloud. She had regained her slim, agile physique after the birth of her kits, nearly five moons later. A thought bit at the back of her mind. Her mate would have one. Her mate would have her nly daughter. She knew Atroxfire was no longer alive, yet she still wanted to avenge herself by giving his clan the burden of her young kit.
The leader wondered breifly whether her little she-kit, Selenekit, would be old enough to even remmber her mother, brother and clan. She knew snatches of memories would snag unexpectedly at her thoughts as she grew up. She knew that one day, as a warrior, she would her mother again. Smethyststar's eyes skimmed the nursery. Her two children slept with her in the leader's den most of the time, though she felt nothing for the kits. Her rebillious son Corbynkit preferred sleeping with the other queens than his uncaring mother.
But this was not her reason for choosing to gaze at the bramble thicket. She knew it was time for Lonelyheart's four kits to be made apprentices. She still resented the white queen's death, though the oher queens had taken good care of her offspring. Knowing that Lonelyheart's short fused son, Brokenkit, was the enemy of her own infant son amused her, as the two black tomkit's were so very alike.
Enough loitering, she finally decided, getting to her paws. Her small body sillhouetted against the scarlet streaked sky behind her as she crouched to leap up onto the sleek black surface of the Shaderock. Neatly landing on the rock, she fondly savoured the cool, smooth surface under her paws. She remembered renaming the rock in honour of her mother, Shadestar. She and her feisty daughter had never sen eye to eye when she had been alive; something Amethyststar bittrly regretted now.
Her voice clear and true, Amethyststar called for her clan. She watched each tom and she-cat slide from thier dens like liquid shadows, some padding from their places around the fresh-kill pile, others breaking apart from their partners they had been sharing tongues with. Amethyststar waited silently as her clan gathered, then launched straight into the ceremony. "I am sure you all know that Lonelyheart's four kits are ready for apprenticeship," she meowed loudly. "We shall honour her spirit, and beg it not to wander - we pray that she has made a safe journey to StarClan."
"Brokenkit, Rosemarykit, Cloudkit, Stonekit, could you come up here, please?" the ebony coloured she-cat waited as he four kits approached on their soft little paws. Brokenkit, his black pelt gleaming in the evening light; Cloudkit, his white fur shimmring like dew on a leaf; Stonekit, even his slate grey fur sleek with grooming, and finally, little Rosemarykit, her long, dark tabby hairs groomed neatly into place.
"Cloudkit, from this moment onwards, until you have earned your warrior name, you shall be known as Cloudpaw," Amethyststar continued. "Pantherstealth, I know you are eager to take on an apprentice. I know Cloudpaw shall be your first, but I am sure you will train him excellently." Amethyststar's amber eyes flicked from Cloudpaw to Pantherstealth. The dappled brown tom stared proudly back. Amethyststar looked away from her wayward brother, her face expressionless.
"Stonekit, from this moment onwards, until you have earned your warrior name, you shall be known as Stonepaw," the black she-cat meowed. "Autumnwreath, you are a stron and able warrior, and I know you will teach Stonepaw everything you learmed." She watched the tabby and white she-cat closely, hoping the warrior was not too young to be a good mentor.
"Rosemarykit, from this moment onwards, until you have earned your warrior name, you shall be known as Rosemarypaw," Amethyststar's voice ran out into the quiet evening. "Razortomb, now that Spectrumflash has become a warrior, I know you are without an apprentice. Having trained him fabulously, I hope you will do the same with Rosemarypaw." Amethyststar knew, in her heart, that her adult son would be an excellent mentor to the young she-cat, after his sucess with Spectrumflash.
"Brokenkit, from this moment onwards, until you have earned your warrior name, you shall be known as Brokenpaw," Amethyststar looked closely at the black kit. "I shall mentor you. After Gillwing became a warrior, I have been able to train another apprentice. I shall teach young Brokenpaw everything that I can." The she-cat touched her nose delicately to the young tom's, her amber eyes staring proudly into her apprentice's.
Amethyststar listened as her clan cheered on the new apprentices. She smiled at the four kittens, before turning away from Brokenpaw. She watched her clan, her eyes narrowed slightly. She wondered breifly where Corbynkit was; while his quieter sister usaully stayed obediently inside her den whilst ceremony was taking place, Corbynkit tended to come and watch anyway. Maybe he ran into a fox. She thought dully.
