vermillionpaw No. This couldn't be happening. It couldn't be true. It just couldn't. No! A scrawny tabby, a orange-red flash through the forest, darted over root and bank of snow, his tail streaming out behind him. Tears slid down his cheeks to freefall through the cold air. The young tom's breath was ragged with tiredness and sobs. He never usually ran this fast - knowing it would effect his breathing for the rest of the day - but he couldn't care less. Not now. What was the point? Raincatcher was dead. His brother, his brave, brave brother, was dead. Vermillionpaw spluttered, his stamina failing rapidly. Who was he kidding? He may be the bravest out of his littermates, but that wasn't hard. And he couldn't be that brave. He'd let his father killed Alderthorn, and now Raincatcher, too. He gritted his teeth. He'd sworn revenge, but surely he was too stupid, too weak, too scrawny and pathetic... Vermillionpaw burst into camp, darted to the furthest, most hidden corner and curled up there to die.

lycorisbreeze.Lycorisbreeze had been in the warrior's den for most of the day. She hated snow. She hated snow. She hated snow. But it was finally starting to clear, and so she poked her head outside, making for the fresh-kill pile. But as she reached it, warm scents of voles and chaffinch and rabbits wafting around her, she saw something that caught her attention. (true, it didn't take much to catch Lycorisbreeze's attention, but that's beyond the point)
"Vermillionpaw?" she mewed, confused. He bolted through camp like something was chasing him. Was something chasing him? She frowned, deciding to follow him. She wasn't really hungry. She could wait. The tortie found him curled up in a ball, his orange fur ruffled and sticking up in different directions. His ribcage shuddered every now and then, as if he were crying. She couldn't tell, his nose was buried in his paws.
"Vermillionpaw? What are you doing?"
ooc: sorry for the bit of powerplaying there. ): [/blockquote]

vermillionpaw The skinny tabby continued to press his face into his paws, wanting to just block everything out. He heard his name, spoken in a soft, somehow familiar. He felt like he should care that that particular cat was here, but he couldn't place the voice. So he ignored it. Vermillionpaw just curled up tighter. But when the cat spoke again, he realised who it was, and his heart thudded painfully. Vermillionpaw raised his head and slowly sat up. His red tabby fur was messy and sticking up in places. He blinked his grey-green eyes at the tortoiseshell she-cat. Embarrasment slowly filled him. Why did it have to be the she-cat he had a crush on who found him? He scraped the ground with his forepaws. "I... Um... Nothing." He cleared his throat, trying to preserve a little dignity in front of the pretty warrioress.

lycorisbreeze. The lie worked, for a little while. Lycorisbreeze wasn't exactly the brightest of cats, but she trusted Vermillionpaw and loved how he was always so understanding. She got a warm feeling from her ears to tail-tip when she remembered him standing up for her against Alderthorn. "Oh, well, that's goo --" she cut off as she looked up and down his face again, still tearful although he was trying to be strong. She frowned. "Vermillionpaw, you're still crying. I don't think... you know, I don't beleive you when you say it's nothing," she meowed softly, her pale eyes looking into his. "Did something happen? You know... something bad?" she remembered how she felt when Elmleaf had left, and how he had comforted her. He must feel something like she did. But his brother hadn't left with another tom, so maybe this was different. "Tell me... please?" [/blockquote]

vermillionpaw The red tabby tom looked down, trying to hide his expression. Relief swept through him as the tortoiseshell seemed to have been fooled by his useless explanation. But then she faltered. Vermillionpaw hastily wiped his face with a sniff, furious embarassment surging through him as he realized that his crush had seen him cry. The apprentice stared downwards, his eyes dewy. "I... I... I... Y-yes," he merwed, eventually caving in. Her eyes were just too much, her expression, the fact that she cared... "Y-yes... Something did happen." He sniffed, then got to his paws. He spent a few long moments grooming his fur, trying to make himself look a little less messy. "You... You know my father, right?" he didn't bother to lower his voice. He didn't care if Windystorm heard him. He'd love to meet his father in battle, so he rip away his life. Like Windystorm had done to Raincatcher.

lycorisbreeze.Lycorisbreeze suppressed a blank look when Vermillionpaw asked her if she knew his father. His father... His father... Lycorisbreeze was embarassed that she knew so little about a tom she liked so much. Thinking hard, she suddenly remembered the day Vermillionpaw and his siblings had been apprenticed - she'd been just an apprentice then, too - and recalled seeing a large white warrior standing beside the kits, each one trying not to shrink away from him. "Yeah," she said with a smile. "I 'member him, now. Windy... Windy-something. Yeah." she gave up on remembering his full name - she'd gotten his face right, wasn't that enough - and tipped her head to one side. "What about him?" [/blockquote]

vermillionpaw The red tabby tom looked at his snowy white paws as Lycorisbreeze struggled. He regretted asking her know. He hadn't been thinking about her when he had done so. As she uttered half of his father's name, Vermillionpaw looked up, his eyes encouraging. "Windystorm," he mewed, his voice quite gentle. The tom blinked his grey-green eyes as Lycorisbreeze went on to ask him about Windystorm. Involuntaruly, Vermillionpaw's claws slid free and sunk into the earth. "You must promise not to tell anybody, for your safety, not mine," the tom told her, hoping he wouldn't scare her by saying this. The weight of keeping this inside was getting too much. He needed to share it with somebody - and it seemed he had found that somebody. "Well... Windystorm... He... He's abused us since we were kits," he admitted, looking at his paws, his eyes blazing. "Roughed us up, mentally and physically, but never enough to get him in serious trouble. But found out, when we were apprenticed, that we have older littermates in EclipseClan; Raincatcher, Tortoiseclaw and Wavedancer. They wanted to help us get rid of Windystorm." He faltered, tears threatening to overcome him again. "B-but it went wrong. Windystorm k-killed... He k-k-killed Raincatcher." The apprentice's face crumpled.
