It was eerie, hunting by nightfall in the Sky Fields. It made the foliage look more threatening than in daylight. Aurora's taller, leaner black and white frame dwarfed that of her only male companion Moonkit. She kept her tail low and she paused.
"Alright, first lesson in hunting," she said with a faint smile, stepping in front of him. "You must use all of your senses. Sight, hearing, taste, touch, smelling, and intuition. All of equal importance. First, get your stance."
The she-cat crouched low to the ground, with her tail down and her ears and whiskers twitching.
"Second, balance your weight evenly. You don't want to crack leaves or twigs, or you'll scare off prey. You certainly don't want to fall over either. If you balance your weight, you won't disturb things." She demonstrated with her posture, elegantly balanced.
"Third, do not yell or make any battle cries of some sort when you're hunting prey. No 'For StarClan' or 'For SerenityClan' or any of that. Now, I'll drag along a cattail reed for you to practice on. Act as if you are hunting it, okay? Do your best," she smiled, breaking off a reed in her mouth and running a badger-length away. She turned away from Moonkit and laid on her belly.

The moon was of the cause of the small amount of light that broke the darkness of dusk. The stars shone quite brightly, but barely assisted the shining rock in space with its job, nor the one that scamper across the earth.
Moonkit.
The kitten's silver pelt glowed in the dim illumination. His gray-blue eyes were fixed on the she-cat ahead of him. He followed her until she halted, as did he. He tried to drop himself into the hunter's crouch, not doing very well. He leapt at the cattail that Aurora was controlling, missing without her moving it a bit. He tried again, only to succeed in failure once again. He really set his mind to it the third time though. He fell into the stance once more, mimicing his "mentor." His haunches in the air, Moonkit aimed his leap skillfully, his foreclaws unsheather and ready to rip the cotton out of the fluffy plant.[/sup]

"Wait, wait, wait," Aurora mewed out, padding over. She held out her paw and gently pushed down Moonkit's rump, which was waving in the air like a flag. "Alright, now concentrate your energy into your paws. Use your hindlegs to push and your forelegs to control."
She paused to demonstrate, flattening her body on the ground. Her muscled tensed and then released like a wild spring. The black and white female landed perfectly on the cattail, claws knitting for control so the 'mouse' wouldn't get away. She released it and gestured for Moonkit to try again.
"Don't be disappointed, Moonkit. You are doing well for a beginner," she said gently.

The SerenityClan kit giggled as Aurora pushed his rear down. "Oops," he mewed with a smile. He watched her as she demonstrated, appreciating her praise and encouragement. "Thanks," Moonkit did as the rogue said, focusing more in his paws. He tensed his muscles, getting ready to surge a burst of energy through them. He leapt into the air, claws unsheathed. He pounced upon the cattail and began bounce about in happiness after ripping the cotton-filled plant to shreds.

Aurora laughed like a sandpiper, quiet, soothing and elegant. There was no anger present in the previous uproar with Pecankit and Selenekit "Good job. Good job," she told the tomkit. "Let's try again."
This time, she broke another cattail and began trotting with it. "Don't let it get away from you and stay downwind. It'll sense you and run faster than you can say StarClan," she directed him, moving jaggedly like an evading rabbit. She paused for a moment and then continued.

Moonkit nodded, drawing his tail to his face and licking it. He could be mouse-brained sometimes, but the silver tabby kitten was very wise and quiet underneath it all. Sometimes, he just felt he needed to fit in. He moved downwind when he found the direction of it, beginning to stalk the new cattail. A perfect image appeared in his mind...him a warrior, following his prey. Not realizing a twig lay ahead, he cracked it, sending the hare in his daydream bouncing off, with him in hot pusuit. Moonkit kept bounding after it until her bumped into a tree, which was really Aurora. He jolted back to his senses, beginning to chuckle inwardly.[/sup]

When Moonkit bumped into her, Aurora swiftly changed directions like the prey she was imitating. She tsked, wagging her tail scoldingly. "You must keep your guard, Moonkit, or else you could have run into a fox or badger," she said. In that instant, the she-cat dropped the cattail and let out a gutteral hiss, raising sheathed claws.
"Many enemies have a weak spot in their nose and eyes. If you can dodge their claws and manage to get behind them, you can deflect most of their offensive assault. Then they'll be confused. At that point, attack them from the weak point." Aurora stalked Moonkit like a lumbering fox, swaying this way and that.

"Sorry, Aurora," he mewed, flattening his ears in embarrassment. He listened intently, his triangular radars slowly beginning to rise again. Moonkit sat a moment, thinking of how to outsmart the "fox." The silver tabby knew he'd messed up with all of the one-on-one training with her before that, so he had to do good. He instantly thought of something, and got to work. He slipped through Aurora's legs and turned on his heels, leaping upon her back.[/sup]

"There is no need to apologize, little one. You are still learning," she said gently, turning her head as Moonkit leapt onto her back. The white and black she-cat leapt onto her hindlegs, mock-hissing and spitting. She tried to buck Moonkit off of her back. "When you are older and stronger, you will have the strength to pin another cat under you," she instructed. "Until that time, you must act fast and scratch as much as you can."

"Okay," Moonkit mewed, pretended to scratch her since his claws were sheathed. He didn't want to really injure the she-cat, or else how would she train him?

Aurora laughed and paused for the moment. "All right, good job, we're done for the night," she said. "Get yourself a good grooming and go meet up with Pecankit and the others. I'll go and get some food, okay?" The white and black female licked Moonkit's ear affectionately and stretched her legs, bounding off like an agile magpie.
((Shard, there's a thread Shade posted with Pecankit. Can you please post there? =] ))[/sub]
