The sun was sinking slowly below the horizon. The clouds were smeared with amber and violet. Twilight was rearing, almost ready to smash her paws down onto the forest. Nights velvety wing waited, dormant, to slide over the window of day and block out the light. But in the fading light, two shapes were visible, trudging over a field of white flowers. One was a large framed ginger and white cat. The other, who was barely visible, was a smaller cat with a snowy white coat. The two were padding close together, nearing the cave which split a dark mouth in the stone hill that stacked up against the pale sky. Spectre shivered as cold swept past her flank. The she-cat licked a slash on her shoulder. The blood on her injuries had dried to a crisp, dark crust, but this was almost as painful as the bleeding. Spectre adjusted her weight, wincing as an injured paw brushed the rough earth. Spectre's ice blue eues sparked with relief as she spotted the cave. Not much further now. Spectre sped up slightly, limping heavily. She pushed through a fringe of dying ferns to pad into the cave. The cool stone floor was light heaven on her sore pawpads. She let out a long sigh of happiness, and sat down on her nest. Spectre began to clean her injuries, screwing up her face as she tasted her blood.

Cursico's back was arched up at an odd angle. The wound to his stomach screamed in protest at any stretching. He flicked his tail, sure he could have torn Vampire to shreds. He turned his head to look behind, flicking his tail at the same time Spectre spe dup. He looked back and continued his slow and lumbering walk. When he arrived at the cave, he slipped in as if he had been doing it for years, then slumped down, curling up around his underside.

Spectre shook herself, her injuries clean. They still stung, but most were not visible beneath her thick white pelt. She turned to look at one flank, and winced. Her fur was far shorter than it had been. Vampire had ripped strips of it out with his long claws. Spectre hissed angrily under her breath. She and Cursico would not lie down and accept this treatment like whimpering hounds. They would fight back. Spectre noticed Cursico enter the cave after her, and smiled. The white she-cat then noticed Cursico's apparent discomfort. The she-cat padded across to him, ice blue eyes worried. "You okay?" she asked.

Cursico looked up at Spectre, his eyes full of love and a new longing. "I'll be okay when his head isn't on his neck" He answered.

Spectre grinned and sat beside her friend, pressing her soft white flank against his. The loner unsheathed her claws. "We can rip him to pieces," she hissed. "Together," she added, her voice certain. Spectre looked breifly at Cursico, smiling. Her light blue eyes were bright with hope. The white loner stretched out her long forelegs, and curled up beside Cursico. She rested her head on his paws, shutting her eyes. "We'd better sleep, for now," she murmured, licking his paws. "We can plan murder some more in the morning." Spectre's breathing soon melted into soft, rumbling snores.

Cursico purred back and nestled his head between her shoulders. Their mingling warmth felt good and he pressed lightly against her, taking in the erotic scent coming from her fur. He fell into sleep with a smile on his cat face.

Spectre blinked open her eyes as sunlight hit them. The white she-cat eased her body away from Cursico's, though his warmth felt good against her pelt. Spectyre shook her coat, wincing as she did so. She turned to ruefully look over her white pelt. Scratches and bites laced it, a couple sticky with dried blood. The loner shuddered, remembering the battle with Vampire the day before. Spectre sat and groomed her snowy pelt, carefully licking the cuts on her body. None bled, but all hurt considerably. The she-cat then stood, satisfied that her fur was as neat as usaul. Spectre then stretched, clenching her teeth in pain, before padding across to the kill pile. She limped on a bitten paw. The white loner picked out a mouse, and lay down to eat it.

Cursico only stirred as Spectre left. He liked to sleep longer than when the sun came up, and he liked being lazy.

Spectre soon demolished the mouse, her teeth flashing like moonlight. The white she-cat licked her lips clean of the residue of her meal. The loner picked up the remains of the fresh kill, carrying it outside. There she buried it, white forepaws flashing as she dug. Afterward, Spectre trotted back into the cave, shaking clinging mud from her paws. The snowy coated loner smirked as she spotted Cursico, still sleeping. She decided against waking him. He needed rest after yestarday. Spectre sat, sighing. She was extremely happy that Cursico had stepped in to save her, but this was mixed up with a new emotion. One she had not felt since the snowy forest, since being with Eaglepaw.

Cursico put a paw over his face, his sleep coming to a drowsy end. But he feinged sleep as it left him, not wanting to move yet. He remained unaware that Spectre was around, his tail curling in and over itself before unrolling to lie on the floor.
