Corbynpaw's breath rushed out as Fernpelt's paws pushed him off course. The smoky tom twisted in midair, landing on his four paws. He did not hesitate even for a moment, immediatly running at Fernpelt. Corbynpaw slid beneath her body, before running around her body in a circle. He then launched himself at her paws, hoping to have succesfully made her dizzy and unblanced her.

Fernpelt watched, curious of what Corbynpaw was trying. He took ehr off balance indeed as he rushed at her paws and the slipped from beneath her, she landed with an 'Oof' in a cloud of dust. 'Well done Corbynpaw. I'm really pleased with your progress in this short time. I'm pushing you harder than I would a normal apprentice, but that's because you have great potential. If only you'd have a nicer attitude.' she muttered the last bit to herself, but looked up with pride in her eyes. 'Let's see what you can catch on the way back to camp and you can have it as soon as you're back, as long as you promise to feed the elders afterwards.'

Corbynpaw stopped, his claws sinking into the earth. The black tom flicked his tail in pride as Fernpelt lost her balance and tripped. The apprentice stared into her sea green eyes, his own eyes dull as stones all of a sudden. He showed no pride at her words. "Whatever," was all he said, padding into the trees after his mentor. The young tom lifted his nose to scent the breeze, and the smell of a vole drifted towards him. Corbynpaw dropped into a crouch and stalked towards the scent. He spotted a flash of dusky brown fur, but before he could pounce it darted back down its hole. Corbynpaw bared his teeth in annoyance, and crouched. After a moment, the vole's nose appeared again. Corbynpaw's paw shot out and pulled the fat little creature from its hole, and he killed it with a quick bite. Corbynpaw carried it back to Fernpelt before continuing to walk on at a reasonable pace.

Fernpelt watched him take her compliments with no sign that he had even heard her that well. She watched his technique as he stalked the vole, and she nodded as he came back to her. 'Well done. I see you've got a feel for hunting already.' she said.

Corbynpaw carried on walking as though he had not heard Fernpelt. He could smell the camp, stronger and stronger as he got closer. The black apprentice halted when he smelt rabbit. The smoky tom sprang up and ran after the bobtail as it broke cover. He knew it was too fast, and it escaped his pounce by miles. Corbynpaw landed hard on all four paws, tail raised. The apprentice bared his teeth in a growl and turned around to join Fernpelt again. His ears burnt with anger; why had he missed?

Fernpelt watched her apprentice go, knowing the rabbit had heard him a mile off. 'You need to be light on your feet, and not make a sound.' she said, padding forward towards camp.

Corbynpaw seethed. He hated Fernpelt telling him what to do. Familiar ground brushed his paws and the scent of EclipseClan strengthened. The black tom gave an irritable sigh. Now he would spend the rest of his day picking ticks from the elders' fur, or making sure that they had enough fresh kill to eat. Corbynpaw had never understood why so many kits dream of their apprenticeship. To him, it was boring. Dull. Just plain boring. Sure, he was allowed to hunt and fight, but only with Fernpelt leaning over his shoulder. The smoky apprentice sank his claws into the earth, longing for release.

Fernpelt rolled her eyes at Corbynpaw's apparent anger. 'You know, the reason there are mentors and apprentices is so that you learn how to become a warrior. You're supposed to take advice and learn from your mistakes, not just shove your nose in the air and ignore it.' she said, tail flicking from side to side and fur rising slightly.

Corbynpaw turned to face her, eyes cold as ice. "Thanks," he mewed, contempt thick in his voice. "But you seem to be forgetting one tiny detail. I - don't - want - to be - a - warrior." He said this slowly deliberately. He wanted the message to sink in. "I don't care," he added. The apprentice flicked his tail and his face softened with mock pity. "Though I suppose you can't help forgetting," he mewed, voice silky. "I suppose a deputy would have so much on her mind." Corbynpaw snorted before padding on.

Fernpelt stopped. 'Do you ever think of anyone but yourself? Obviously not, that was a stupid question. If you don't want to become a warrior, why are you here?' she asked, then shook her head and padded on ahead of Corbynpaw, into camp.
