Grieverstone sighed happily and murmured, "Please little ones save the clans." Then Grieverstone said, "Thank-you Darkmagic, I have already laid out the rabbit for the sick ones."

Ravenpaw could scent the dread in the air. The young apprentice had been sitting in the apprentices' den, mulling everything over. The attack on Spectreflame and Firestar, Wovenknot and Brokenheart's sickness, and the unexpected arrival of the kit and the injured loner. The black she-cat stiffened mid-lick, her icy blue eyes uneasy. What had happened now? Ravenpaw got to her paws, padding from the den. Slipping between the leafy fern fronds, the she-cat noticed Firestar sitting in the centre of the camp, the clan thronging around her. Oh no! Had she missed a clan meeting? The apprentice slunk into the crowd, hopinh no one noticed her lateness. She froze at Firestar's saddened words. Her tail and ears drooped and her bright eyes dulled and clouded with pain and loss. "No," she murmured. Shakenleaf was dead; her mentor was dead. She barely had the strength to haul herself up again and stagger over to Darkmagic. Her tail lifted slightly in respect for her new mentor, before she shrank back into the crowd, feeling numb.
Spectreflame watched in horror from the medicine den. Shakenleaf was dead. The white warrior noticed her sister shrink away from the crowds, her dark, smoky fur bristling with sorrow and shock. Spectreflame watched their mother emerge from the nursery to comfort her daughter by pressing up against her. Wovenknot curled in her mossy nest, her light blue eyes dull as a couple of river pebbles. The black loner lay beside Brokenheart, one of his forelegs twisted to a strange angle, and his chest matted with dried blood. He still had not woken.

Firestar saw Ravenpaw and called her over.

Grieverstone laid down in her mossy nest. She was tired and she hadn't slept for two days now. Laying her tail over her nose she closed her eyes and let slumber take over.

Highfrost looked over when he heard Firestar call Ravenpaw over. He felt a heavy weight pressed on his chest. "Does she know that Darkmagic is her new mentor?" the tom asked mostly to himself. He glanced down at Shakenleaf just as rain started to fall in little drops.

"Yes, she does," Firestar didn't dare take her eyes off the sky, as droplets of rain as fat as a leaf fell onto the ground around.

Ravenpaw trudged over to her leader, her plumy black tail dragging limply in the dust. Her ice blue eyes had utterly lost the spark of life that they usually held. The apprentice halted before the ginger she-cat, looking sadly up at her leader. "Yes, Firestar?" Her voice was heavy with greif and something like exhaustion.

"Come sit with me," She meowed, inviting her to sit. "He was a great warrior. He would like to know you and I are still strong..." She dropped her head.
