freespirit.
Freespirit stood on the threshold of the Leader's Den. A look of confusion had twisted her face so she looked like she was in pain. In essence, she was.
For the past few days, Freespirit had ignored her warrior duties and had condemned herself to her mossy nest. After she broke up with Brokencalling, she felt as if she couldn't do anything anymore. She couldn't live without him. How did I survive before I met him? Her heart was broken, and it was all her own fault! If I hadn't been so stupid about his secret... Why was I so misunderstanding? She still didn't understand it now. But she was willing to forgive, after thinking about it. But she didn't have the guts to march back to him and tell him.
But the worst part of the whole situation was the guilt. She still felt guilty for knowing the terrible secret. It pinned her down like a trapped butterfly. And she couldn't keep it to herself anymore. She had to tell Clearstar. She could do something about it. And maybe it would help her to make-up with Brokencalling. Maybe.
She cleared her throat nervously, and decided to step inside. "Clearstar? May I have a word with you?" Her voice warbled and showed how guilty she felt.

Clearstar The snowy she-cat raised her head from her nest as she heard an anguished voice outside. She got to her paws, blue eyes wide with worry. As Freespirit entered Clearstar sat down, inviting her in more with her tail, still watching the she-cat with concern. "Freespirit? What's wrong?" she asked her quietly, head to one side as she studied the she-cat, waiting for an explanation. [/sub]

freespirit.
Freespirit swallowed loudly and took another step forward. The tips of her ears brushed against the low dirt ceiling. She wasn't sure if she should sit down or keep standing. She decided against sitting, and switched from one foot to the others. She was silent for a moment as she gathered her courage. It's for the best. Right? Ignoring the question, she began to speak. The words began to tumble out of her mouth suddenly, as she was so eager to get the issue out in the open. "Oh, Clearstar! Brokencalling told me a big secret of his a couple of days ago, and I just can't keep it to myself anymore!" Her eyes grew wide, and they began to shine with tears. "It was the horrible memory that he loss after the battle with the Tribe, but he remembered it again..." Her throat constricted suddenly. Another voice hissed in her head. What are you doing? You're going to mess everything up even more! She shook her head to herself. No, I can't keep it to myself anymore! Signs of her internal battle showed on her face as it twisted guiltily.

Clearstar Clearstar kept quiet while Freespirit fidgeted, waiting for her to began speaking. At the sudden outburst the snowy white she-cat jumped, before stepping forwards so her pelt brushed against Freespirit's. "It's okay, take your time, there's no hurry. Just tell me what you need to say" Clearstar said to her fellow Clanner, worry creasing her forehead as she saw Freespirit struggling within herself. [/sub]

freespirit.
Freespirit took a deep breath. Just say it. Everything will be fine. She nodded to herself, and jerked her head up, so she could meet her leader's eyes. "...Brokencalling had a sister, named Flowerpaw. When they were apprentices, she fell in love with an apprentice from... Brightclan. His name was Rowanpaw." She inhaled deeply again. Her muscles began to slack as the words poured from her mouth. "Brokencalling was really mad at her for doing that. Flowerpaw said it was nothing, but Brokencalling was suspicious. One day, when Flowerpaw went to meet Rowanpaw, Brokencalling secretly followed them. He said... he said he got really angry. He couldn't control himself. So... he killed Rowanpaw." She shuddered at the thought of the innocent life lost, because Brokencalling couldn't keep his claws away... "Poor Rowanpaw...," She murmured to herself.

Clearstar Clearstar nodded slowly at the first part of Freespirit's speech, she had heard this story. But her understanding expression changed to horror as Freespirit continued on. She exhaled noisily as the she-cat finished, her stance rigid. "This was talked about. Everyone always just thought it was an unsolved mystery, the death of Rowanpaw, that it had been rogues or something" she trailed off, trying to keep the shock from her face. How could Brokencalling.....She stopped and shook herself. "Is Brokencalling able to walk yet? If he is, please go to him and send him to me. If not, I will go and talk to him in the medicine cat den" she said mechanically, still trying to make sense of what she had just been told. [/sub]

freespirit.
Freespirit felt as if the weight had been lifted off her chest. Ah! She didn't feel so guilty anymore. She let the ghost of a smile slip on to her face.
But then, a wisp of worry floated into her head. ...What have you done? Now Brokencalling's going to get in serious trouble! Her eyes opened wide in horror. Ohnoohnoohno...
Freespirit would never normally be redused to options such as begging. But this was Brokencalling! This was the tom she loved! (Or had loved, anyway.) How could she be so cruel? How could she do this to him? "Please, please Clearstar! Don't punish him too harshly! I know he didn't mean to! And it happened so long ago!" Before she could allow Clearstar to say something, she turned around sharply and exited the den.
She trotted towards the medicine cat, but slowed down as she reached the entrance. What would she say to him? And what would he say to her? She fretted, but didn't dwell on it. She gulped and stepped into the cool shadow. A smell of herbs washed over her nose and into her mouth. Not bothering to look for Lavenderlace, she patted over to Brokencalling. He appeared to be asleep. She quivered a little as she spoke. "Brokencalling?"

brokencalling.
'don't, don't!'. oh starclan, she was screaming and crying. those two words that had always haunted him. 'how could you?' who did she think he was? did she think he had an asnwer. he didn't know. why didn't she know? they were facing off, tails lashing. tears dripping down her eyes. 'rowanpaw...' his name was so common now. how could she love him more? no, she was supposed to be his sister, more than rowanpaw's lover... but her tears wouldn't stop and she strode past him.
claws glinting. a yowl of pain. 'flowerpaw...' but she had left him. he was standing there all alone as she padded away. blood dripped onto the ground in a steady stream from where he had slashed himself. red, hot, stinging and dangerous.
murderer.
Brokencalling barely stirred in his sleep. Anyone looking on from the outside might mistake him for a dreamer or a fitful sleeper. He didn't make a sound as he slept, and his body stayed tightly curled up. There were less poultices covering him now, and more recent slashes were beginning to fade into even more scars. But the brown and grey tabby wasn't at all peaceful. He was still in a state of shock over his whole arguement with Freespirit. He had yelled at her; had told her to go. She hadn't come back since, and Brokencalling was beginning to realize just how badly he had screwed things up. He should have told later, or more slowly. He shouldn't have yelled at her. But Freespirit had been the one to bring Timbersmoke into the arguement- Brokencalling knew he had hurt her. His words had slapped her, damaging her. He would never forgive himself.
When her voice broke the mournful silence of the den, Brokencalling first thought he was in a dream. The tom shifted and sighed, wanting to escape and wanting to stay at the same time. Her voice was so... perfect. But when images of her didn't flash before him, the scarred warrior hesitantly opened his eyes. There she stood, at the entrance to the den. The tom wanted to leap up and rub against her, to mingle his purr with hers. The way she said his name was sorrowful; regretful. His heart leapt at the possbility of starting over, but then a thought passed through his mind. Suppose she was scared of him? Brokencalling looked at her eyes once again and realized this wasn't a companionable visit. This was serious. "Freespirit," he replied curtly, as cold as ice.[/blockquote]

freespirit. Freespirit waited patiently as he stirred from his sleep. She pressed her mouth together, making it taught. She took a step closer, and then another. She felt nervous, for some reason. Her heart was pumping a little faster than it should have been. What would he do?
His greeting was cold and insincere. It felt as if he had driven an icy shard between her ribs and through her heart. She shrugged off a bout of chills that suddenly made goosebumps appear under her fur. Don't look weak in front of him. He's obviously fine now, you have to look it too. She straightened her back, so she appeared taller. She lifted her nose into the air, as if she was feelinging disdained. "Clearstar would like to see you. Can you walk yet? If not, I'll tell Clearstar to visit you here." She looked at his injured leg, and she felt a trickle of guilt. If he hadn't saved her from that savage fox that had snuck up behind her, he wouldn't have hurt his leg at all.[/blockquote]

brokencalling.
The tom immediately felt bad for being so harsh on her. He sighed, wanting to apologize. But he knew it was too late for that know. If he was going to apologize, it needed to be later. Half-expecting Freespirit to just walk out the door, Brokencalling fought to keep the surprise from appearing on his face when she she stayed. There was a pause before she spoke. Her words chilled him to the bone, and the tom found himself completely astounded. He was to see Clearstar? Why? What had he done wrong? Had Freespirit told her about his murder of Rowanpaw? Brokencalling felt icy trendils wrap around his heart. She had betrayed him.
"You told her," the tom hissed. It was not a question, but rather, a statement. The tabby was sure of it, and he winced internally. He didn't know how she could betray him like that. Getting to his feet, Brokencalling wouldn't allow Freespirit to think he was weak. He shot her a venomous glare, anger, pain and bitterness in his eyes. It hurt him to even cast that gkance, but any remorse he might have felt had been washed away. "I can walk," he grunted, narrowing his eyes as he padded out of the den. The snow stung his pelt, but he left Freespirit behind as he walked into his leader's den.
"Clearstar?"[/blockquote]

Clearstar Clearstar looked hard at Freespirit as she frantically spoke again, her eyes confused. This had obviously taken a lot from the she-cat to tell her this. It was hurting her and would hurt Brokencalling too. Clearstar felt a small glimmer of content that Freespirit had been able to tell her this. She said nothing as the she-cat left and then sat thinking. How should she go about this? That thought kept her quiet for a few minutes, before a voice broke into her concentration.
"Come in Brokencalling" she said as she heard him, indicating for him to sit with a flick of her tail. The white fae looked at him for a moment, as if to judge his expression. "I take it you know what this is about, Brokencalling. I would like you to tell me your story. Then we can decide what to do" she said quietly, waiting for him to speak. [/sub]

brokencalling.
The dusty tabby noticed the glance that Clearstar shot at Freespirit, but he didn't cast his own glance at the traiterous she-cat. He remained stoically seated, keeping his eyes fixed on one point straight ahead of him- which was Clearstar's left ear. Licking his muzzle, Brokencalling didn't let his expression flicker as the leader spoke. Not blinking, he bowed his head quietly. He looked up at Clearstar, a sigh escaping his muzzle. She was so soft; so quiet. It was like the calm before the storm. Straightening up, Brokencalling prepared to tell his story. Pelt prickling, the tom swallowed and began. "It all started with my sister Flowerpaw."
"We were the best of friends. But she had a secret that she didn't tell me. She was seeing a cat from another Clan. Rowanpaw," mewed Brokencalling, not wavering. "She would sneak out at night. I asked her again and again where she was going. She never told me," his voice dropped. "She would always play it off as hunting or something. I didn't believe her. One night, I followed her. I found her at the border, nuzzling Rowanpaw and licking his cheek. Anger took over me. I ran from the woods, yowling. I never meant to kill him, but..." the tom winced, his composure shattering. "I just...hit him, and my claws were... and he fell. He fell to the ground dead. I... I just couldn't... Flowerpaw went back to camp after mourning his body... I just couldn't move."[/blockquote]

Clearstar The snowy she-cat listened quietly to Brokencalling's story, not moving. When he finished she looked up, eyes sympathetic. "I understand Brokencalling. I wish I had known this earlier but.....it is in the past. And I am not going to punish you for something that has obviously caused you so much pain. Life can go on as if this has not happened" she decided, nodding slightly as if to back up her own decision. She nodded to indicate that he could leave before calling after him. "Oh, Brokencalling. I don't know what is going on between you and Freespirit, but I think you should know how hard it was for her to tell me that. I could read the pain in her eyes at every word. So do not think that she did this out of spite or whatever other reason it could have been. Because it hurt her very being having to tell me that" she said quietly, looking the tom in the eyes. She held his gaze for a moment before turning back to her nest. "We are finished now" she whispered, laying down in her nest to think. [/sub]

brokencalling
Brokencalling let out the breath that he had been holding as Clearstar said she wouldn't punish him. Completely floored, Brokencalling could only manage a nod. Why had Freespirit beeen spying for Clearstar all this time if Clearstar didn't care what he had done? His revelation seemed only to put her mind at ease. he wasn't being punished. Clearstar wasn't even mad- though the tabby had to admit her quiet voice was scarier than her anger. Flicking an ear in acknowledgement, Brokencalling got up to leave. "Thank you, Clearstar," he murmured, voice neutral. Taking a step out into the cold clearing, he paused as she called his name again.
Brokencalling tensed as she spoke about Freespirit. Half of him just wanted to whip around, ears flat and eyes narrow to tell her that there was nothing going on between him and Freespirit. He didn't want anything to do with her at all. But Brokencalling simply dipped his head, licking his muzzle. Not meeting Clearstar's gaze, he murmured a reply. "Yes, Clearstar," he said quietly before leaving without a second glance at Freespirit. It was time to head back to the medicine cat's den. Back to sleep.
Maybe he would wake up and this will all have been a dream.[/blockquote]
