I've always wanted to be Leader of BrightClan. Ever since I was a young kitten. My mother told me of her own father who she had never met. He was the great Wrenstar, former leader of BrightClan, before Ghostlystar came into picture, who was the greatest Leader of all. I was never jealous of Ghostlykit, my own brother, as we were growing up. I was better than him, well, I thought that. But we were best friends. We are best friends to this day. But now I am walking toward Moonshard, my brother and two other random cats following behind us. I was on my way to be Leader and Ghostlykit would be my Deputy. That's the way it is supposed to be. I smiled to myself.

Then to his own dismay, the tom woke up. He was not heading toward Moonshard under the stars with his companions, nor was there a need for another Leader to take position. The little tom dreaming that magnificent dream was no more than a fluffy kitten curled up next to his two brothers and sister next to their mother in a dark den. Around them were other cats, queens with their kits. It was the nursery and Wrenkit was a kit, and nothing more than that.

Sighing, the tabby kitten blinked open his glowing green eyes to discover that it was morning. The only way he could tell that it was morning by the small crevice near the base of the back of the den, which was where he was facing. The rest of the light was blocked by his mother and she was doing a good job of blocking out the cold that he could feel was rushing in and out of the protected den. It had been cold lately, snowing a bit here and there as well. Wrenkit found the snow to be very fun to play in and since they were so small, the littlest bit of snow was a lot to them. He would be Wrenstar and help his "Clan" in time of crisis, meaning the "snowstorm".

It was morning! Wrenkit finally remembered that when it was morning, he had to wake his family up. They couldn't sleep anymore. It was time to play. He bounced up, wriggling to get out of his spot between Ghostlykit and Azaleakit. This movement woke Ghostlykit immediately who raised his head and smiled cheerfully at his brother. "Good morning, brother. I was wondering when you were going to wake us up," he meowed quietly, chuckling as he spoke. "Morning," Wrenkit said simply and smiled. He was the only one who wasn't angry with Wrenkit when he woke them up. Azaleakit... It was hard to read her sometimes, and Tawakit could be so lazy. It took a lot of effort to get him up.

After some effort between the two brothers but they managed to get the groggy Tawakit up and Azaleakit followed right after him as usual. The four young kittens padded around their mother, out the den, and into the light of the rising sun that was just above the treetops now, sending glistening sparkles across the light sheet of snow covering the camp floor. "Snow!" Ghostlykit exclaimed as he ran into the white fluff, throwing it around and squealing with excitement. "Wait! Let's play a game. I'll be Wrenstar," the tabby kitten meowed, taking his first step into the snow, his face showing pride that was so corny that even Azaleakit laughed. Her bashful face gleamed as she stared at the snow in wonder. "And I can be a queen, right? With a little litter of kits? My name will be Azaleafrost," her words were almost like questions but Wrenkit nodded and smiled at her. Tawakit licked her ear and then looked at Wrenkit. He was about to ask for Deputy but Ghostlykit got there first. "Oh, can I be your Deputy? Like the stories Mama tells us? Wrenstar and Ghostlystar. I should be your Deputy," he said nodding his head. He had made up his mind and there was no changing it. "Okay Ghostlywind. Tawakit?" he meowed, looking back at his ginger and white brother. "Tawathorn. I'll be a warrior, of course," he smiled, though he didn't say much. He was one of the quieter ones of the group.

Then it happened.

These tomkits were very protective of their family and everyone was protective of Azaleakit. Just as they were about to begin, a young hyper apprentice that Wrenkit did not recognize bumped into the small fluffy she-cat, sending her sprawling across the snow. "Oh sorry fluffy but stay out of my way!" he blurted as Azaleakit squealed in surprise and Tawakit gave a quick glance to Wrenkit and then to the young apprentice who stood watching the kittens. Tawakit looked like he was about to snap at the cat but he turned away and went over to Azaleakit to help her. Wrenkit and Ghostlykit both went up to this other cat, though Ghostlykit's face was much more peaceful then Wrenkit's. "HEY! Watch where you're going! You could've really hurt her! And don't call her names like that! Her name is Azaleakit!" he yelled, green eyes blazing.

There wasn't much that Wrenkit got this furious about, but someone calling someone in his family names, made him angry. The apprentice looked a little sorry but then he laughed and walked away. Wrenkit almost went after him but Ghostlykit put his tail on his brother's shoulder and shook his head. "Tawakit and Azaleakit went back to the nursery to chill out for a little bit. Mother would prefer if we were both there, too. Leave that one alone. Let's go," Ghostlykit murmured, walking with Wrenkit back to the nursery. He was the peacemaker of the family and it was helpful when Wrenkit lost his temper. Since they were so close, they could help each other like that. But Wrenkit wouldn't let that dumb apprentice get away with that. He smiled slightly and nodded. "Yes, lets go back, but when I'm older, I'll see to that apprentice," he mewed quietly and smiled bigger. Ghostlykit laughed and so they returned to the nursery to be gratefully welcomed by his wonderful family.

The sound of loud voices woke Tawakit from his deep sleep. The small tom kept his eyes shut, not wanting to leave the warm nest. He knew the moment he got to his paws, the cold would seep through his fur into his skin. And besides, he was comfortable. Why should he have to move to stop some argument...? He was just settling back down, sleep reaching out for him with silken hands, when a high-pitched, piping voice hit his ears. Azaleakit! Tawakit was on his small paws in an instant, ginger and white marked tabby coat bristling as though he had been struck by lightning. The youngster padded from the nursery with haste, a frown clear on his face. He could see a small scene as he hesitated on the threshold. Azaleakit was looking angry and upset - Wrenkit irritated. He knew this was probably on the edge of becoming a full-blown fight, due to Wrenkit's slowly-ignited, but explosive temper. The tom hurried in, quickly picking up the gist of the argument.

It seemed Azaleakit had been watching a butterfly, which Wrenkit had pounced upon and murdered, it seemed. Something so small and meaningless - bit anything could set off Azaleakit. "Why did you have to kill it? It wasn't doing anything!" Azaleakit's voice was fast growing hysterical. Tawakit padded past Ghostlykit, who was watching, and stood beside his sister. "It was a butterfly, Azaleakit! Calm down!" Tawakit stood between his warring siblings, expression apprehensive. "I think you should both calm down." His voice was low and serious. Azaleakit began to wail. "But he killed it, Tawakit!" Tawakit turned to look at Wrenkit. It seemed his brother had found himself. His expression had already cleared, before he exhaled deeply and walked away. Azaleakit continued to wail. Tawakit found himself trying to comfort her, her head on his shoulder. He could see Ghostlykit bobbing about, trying desperately to catch a leaf that was drifting on the breeze. "Why don't we go and join in?" he mewed encouragingly. Azaleakit sniffed, then nodded. The two of them padded over to join their brother.

"This time.. This time... Nope! Oh no." Ghostlykit was laughing cheerfully as the two approached him. He turned his bright eyes onto his siblings. "And what can I do for you?" As usual, his voice was pouring with enthusiasm and light. "Could we join in?" Tawakit asked. Ghostlykit rolled his eyes at the question - as if they needed to ask. After this he gave a nod. Tawakit sprang up as the leaf fluttered upwards in the breeze. He missed the leaf and skidded on his paws, cursing lightly under his breath. After this, Ghostlykit made another attempt, followed by a half-hearted bat of the paw from Azaleakit. This went on until Tawakit's paws tired and he slumped on the grass, letting his sliver of laziness enfold him.
