tansypaw In the scarlet dusk light, a she-cat stood by the entrance of the CloudClan camp. From behind she looked utterly ordinary. Her fur was neatly groomed. It was dazzling white, with ginger splotches like fallen autumn leaves. But as the she-cat turned, it became obvious she was not just ordinary. Her eyes were fixed downward, as though she didn't want others to see them. Tansypaw had certainly grown. She had become quite pretty, at her age of ten moons. But still she kept her blind green gaze fixed downwards. Despite misgivings, she had been told to patrol the entrance of the camp. She was pretty sure that, if anything did break in, she wouldn't be able to stop it. With a sigh, Tansypaw took a couple of restless steps before sitting down.

Quetzal sitting in this room playing Russian Roulette, finger on the trigger to my dear Juliet A soft, conniving laugh escaped her fanged maw that slipped through the shadows of CloudClan's evening camp. Some of the Clan was away, as she expected. It was the Gathering time.
"Look up, silly girl, or are you afraid of seeing Death?"
The silver she-cat did not know that the ginger and white femme in front of her was blind, but if she knew, one would doubt that she honestly would care. They still bled equally, yes?
"Some patrol you are." Another laugh hollowly pounded the air, the only noise since Quetzal's steps were silent. She appeared behind the she-cat, her claws silently unsheathing.

tansypaw The ginger and white apprentice gasped, the sharp intake of breath sending soft echoes rippling around the camp. Tansypaw tensed, her shoulders shaking. "Who's there?" she called out, trying to keep her voice steady. She raised her head, green eyes wide, ears pricked. Fear shivered through her body. Tansypaw whipped around as she heard the hiss of a voice. Tansypaw staggered blindly backwards, her own claws clumsily unsheathed. Tansypaw flattened her ears in utter terror. "There's p-plenty of warriors left," she choked out. She knew she had no chance against this killer. She couldn't see. This cat could easily creep up on her. Tansypaw wanted to wail and screech like a tiny kit, but instead she kept silent, quivering.

Quetzal sitting in this room playing Russian Roulette, finger on the trigger to my dear Juliet That brought another disdainful laugh. "Warriors? Stopping me? Nice try, girl," Quetzal replied softly. "My name is Quetzal." She suddenly realized that the apprentice she was speaking to was blind, and her grin widened sinfully. Her paw raised and she swung over the she-cat's ears, missing on purpose to scare her. "I'm the reason why there's a massacre in Black River Forest." She slashed at Tansypaw's tail, and then just to make her scream, she aimed for the girl's muzzle.

tansypaw Her brain couldn't connect with what was happening. She had known this was a bad idea, but nobody had listened. They'd just dismissed her words as fear. Tansypaw shivered as the she-cat spoke of the warriors. "They c-could stop you, any day," she squeaked out. "Your j-just a coward." The apprentice squealed in fright as she heard a paw whistle over her ears. She whipped around, confused, her blind eyes huge. Suddenly pain ripped through her tail. She cried out in pain, feeling blood leaving her body. She had to call out... "Grasspaw! Help me!" The words were out of her mouth before she had time to think about them. She immediatly knew that she should have called for her mother or father. Tansypaw crouched, fur bristlingm tail bleeding, unaware of the attack heading towards her.

Grasspaw And I know that its hard to fall On your own so I'm here so you dont have to fall alone [/i] "Don't touch her, you--!"
A gray, white, and brown tabby shot forward with a speed unfathomable, his hind legs launched him into the she-cat's shoulders. She smelt of rogue and death, which seemed a little redundant but that wasn't the point right now. Grasspaw stood in front of Tansypaw, hissing as the silver she-cat pulled herself up to her feet, opening her maw.
"Quetzal, I know who you are," he interrupted before she could speak.
She closed her mouth into a smile and shook her head. "Smart boy...but dumb enough to save a blind useless piece of--"
"Watch who you're calling 'useless', she-cat," the blue-green-eyed tom countered scathingly, interrupting her again.
Quetzal's eye twitched but she kept the smile on her face. She stretched and lunged without warning for Grasspaw, colliding with the tom in a flurry of fur and claws. The tom screamed in pain as the rogue's scythe-sharp talons connected with his shoulders. He hissed and struggled to yank his attacking appendages out of her grip.
She suddenly leapt away, cackling sardonically and twirling around. "Having problems, tomcat?"
"Yeah, there's this stupid cat in front of me that won't shut up!" Grasspaw roared, shaking Quetzal's attack off and leaping for her.
She deftly pivoted, turning with a smirk and slashing downward. Blood splattered the ground like water thrown from a bucket. The she-cat blinked and turned back, barely registering the pain unless she looked into the narrowed teal eyes of the furious tomcat on her spine. His teeth and nails were ripping violently at her flesh. Her smile disappeared.
"I'm going to make you regret fiddling, stupid boy!" she shrieked, rolling onto her back in an attempt to crush him.
Grasspaw nimbly dodged out of the way but misstepped and earn a nasty gash across his ears. He let out a cry of pain and backed up. She was no longer taunting him. He had forced her to be serious.
Quetzal didn't stop flailing her claws, shooting straight for his throat with her curved teeth. The CloudClanner gasped and leapt aside, rolling over himself and lunging forward. He caught the rogue on the shoulder, hanging on by his teeth and trying not to try as the she-cat's claws began to assault his flanks.
"FOR TANSYPAW!" Grasspaw howled, releasing Quetzal and jumping at her neck.
The rogue skull-bashed him just as his claws raked against her ears and eyes. She hissed and turned, shoving past Tansypaw and leaping away into the night. Grasspaw stumbled to his feet, hissing and spitting like a fierce alley tom. He looked dazed however.
"I want...Dragonflydance," he whispered softly, smiling at Tansypaw and resting his head on her shoulder.
It was a surprise that he had lived to tell the tale that he had driven Quetzal out of camp.

tansypaw Tansypaw wailed as Quetzal continued to attack her. The ginger and white she-cat cringed, her eyes screwed up. Suddenly, she heard a fierce voice. A waft of scent filled her nose. Grasspaw! But he sounded so utterly different from the fun, giggly tom he usually was. He sounded like a warrior. The apprentice heard hisses and the clash of claws. She smelt blood and chaos, and sound roared in her ears. She want to turn and flee, but instead she stayed rooted to the stop. Fear screamed at her. But still she did nothing. She didn't even try to help her friend. Terror held her back. Suddenly she heard the rustle of pawsteps, and the scent of blood grew stronger. But Quetzal was gone. She flinched as Grasspaw laid his head on her shoulder, before realizing who it was. She laid him on the ground as best she could, her blind eyes huge and her mouth lolling. "Grasspaw! Grasspaw! Grasspaw!" she continued to screech his name, until her throat yowled with agony. She nudged him, again and again, trying to force him to stay living. He couldn't die. He wouldn't die. He wouldn't leave her, no he would never leave her. He'd always promised that...
Tansypaw butted his flank furiously with her head, sobs falling from her mouth. "Grasspaw, please, hold on," she begged. But she had no idea when Dragonflydance would be back from the Gathering, and all she could smell was her friend's blood. It was sticky on her paws, her face. His blood was on her paws. If Grasspaw died, it would be her fault. Or was he already dead? She was in too much of a state to tell. Tansypaw sobbed, choking and retching on her own tears. This couldn't be happening. It just couldn't be happening!

Grasspaw And I know that its hard to fall On your own so I'm here so you dont have to fall alone [/i] "I'm okay, baby. Don't cry," he said softly, his voice like a whisper between the grasses. The apprentice smiled absently, forgetting that Tansypaw couldn't see it. "Is Big Sister here? Ribbontail...Ribbontail could help me. I just need someone...someone..." He chuckled hollowly, spitting up blood and rolling onto his stomach. He pulled himself to his feet and touched his nose to hers. "I'm here to protect you. I promised you that...ah...many...many moons ago." His hazy blue-green eyes watched hers, their opacity mimicked Tansypaw's.
"I love you... Do you know that? You were always more than a sister to me."

tansypaw Okay? How could he be okay? The scent of his blood was all around. She knew that the rest of the clan had only not detected it because they deep in slumber. The ginger and white she-cat trembled. "Yes, yes, I'll go and get mother," she breathed, her blind eyes bulging. Tansypaw felt his nose press against her's. She pushed him gently back to the ground. "You protected me excellently," she sobbed, feeling utterly wretched. "Now please, lie still while I go get Ribbontail." The apprentice turned to pad away. Grasspaw's whispered words stopped her. They struck her ears like a gunshot. He loved her...? Yes, brotherly love, of course... But... More than that? Tansypaw twisted around, her eyes huge. Yes, true, she had always loved Grasspaw. Her Grasspaw. The only cat who did not treat her differently because of her blindness. She ran to him, her paws slipping in pools of unseen blood. She pressed her nose to his sweaty cheek. "I love you too," she breathed, emotion bursting in her voice. "And I always will. Please hold on Grasspaw, please don't leave me." She ran to the warriors' den, scenting her way. She darted inside, tripping over sleeping bodies in her haste to find her mother. "Ribbontail! Ribbontail! Grasspaw's hurt! Help, somebody!" Tears coursed down her cheeks. ribbontail The speckled silver shape of Ribbontail was curled inside the warriors' den. Her beatiful pelt melded with that of her mate, who she was curled beside. Her spangled tail was curled over her nose, and her sapphire eyes were shut. She was fast asleep. Ribbontail was dreaming about happier times. Times before the Tribe, times when her mother was still alive. She was dreaming of times when her kits were still in the nursery. A pang ran through her gently slumbering body. She still missed waking up with her daughters pawing at her flanks. Suddenly, something collided with her, rousing her immediatly. Dragged out of her sleep, Ribbontail stood clumsily, blinking. "What in the name of StarClan...?" She gasped when she spotted Tansypaw. There was blood all over the usually neat fur of her kit. "Tansypaw! Tansypaw! Are you alright?" She stopped her desperate yowling to listen to her daughter's words. The silver bengal darted from the warriors' den. Her blue eyes grew huge at the sight of Grasspaw. She ran to him. "Oh, Grasspaw," she whispered. Fear engulfed her. Without Dragonflydance, or Cometpaw, they were stuck. Grasspaw would surely die. Determination filled her. She scraped together the little medical knowledge she possesed and ran into the forest, to collect cobwebs.

Grasspaw And I know that its hard to fall On your own so I'm here so you dont have to fall alone [/i] "I'll...I'll always wait...for...for you," he whispered breathily, grunting slightly as he was pushed back. He couldn't feel pain right now. "Ah..." He swallowed air, blood-tainted air. The wounds on him were small but they were deep. That Quetzal. She was like a woodpecker, using their bills to drive deep with tiny holes. Her claws had done that to him. Oh, StarClan, now it was starting to hurt. Her screams, her tears. Oh, it hurt him, cut him deeper than Quetzal's talons ever could.
"Don't cry...please, Tansypaw," Grasspaw wheezed. A scent similar to hers but more milky and smelling of additional moss and grass wrapped around him. He couldn't see, only smell and feel, taste and hear.
"Ribbontail?" he whispered, looking up blankly and smiling as if he was a little kitten tagging after the silver bengal's tail a while back. "Hi..." He chuckled, sitting still until they figured out what to do with him.

tansypaw The young she-cat ran from the den after her mother, not bothering to apologize to the grumbling warriors she had woken up. Wherever she walked, blood scent coated the air. She could barely find her way back to Grasspaw. Only a faint wisp of his scent attracted her. The blind apprentice staggered over to her friend. She burst into fresh tears at her the sight of him. He looked so weak, so utterly unlike Grasspaw. She half expected him to spring to his paws and burst out laughing, telling her it had all been a joke. If only he would do that... But he didn't. Tansypaw sniffed valiantly at his words. "O-okay," she mewed, voice trembling with despair. "I-I-I'm not crying." She crouched beside Grasspaw, pressing up against him. She shut her blind eyes, not caring that his blood was seeping into her pelt. ribbontail Her petite paws thudded on the grass as she searched. Her mind was desperate, begging her to go on. She was blinded by terror for Grasspaw. The warrioress stopped, taking a deep breath to clear her mind. Yes. There was a hollow log just outside the camp. There was bound to be plenty of cobwebs there. The slender she-cat headed in that direction, huffing with tiredness. When she reached the long, broken trunk, she inserted a paw and removed a swathe of silvery cowebs. Angrily she shook away a spider, and then turned and leapt with all her might. She cleared the narrow stretch of river that surrounded the CloudClan camp, then squeezed under a line of ferns. She raced over to Grasspaw and Tansypaw. Ribbontail pressed the cobwebs to Grasspaw's wound. "Hold on, my baby," she pressed him, licking his ears, her eyes desperate. She was glad Tansypaw could not see them.

Grasspaw And I know that its hard to fall On your own so I'm here so you dont have to fall alone [/i] Grasspaw rested his head on Tansypaw, yawning and nestling against her. He heard Ribbontail's comforting voice and he blinked, looking up at her. The tom smiled behind the pain and blood that masked the true Grasspaw. "Am I all better now, Sissy?" He laughed softly and stared down at his bloody paw, staring down at the claws that had driven Quetzal away. Ribbontail was dressing his wounds.
"Can I sleep? I'm so tired, Sissy..." He stumbled to his paws but fell over, nearly toppling onto Tansypaw. "How long will it be until Dragonflydance gets here...?" He yawned again, purring as he felt and scented Tansypaw against him.

ribbontail Ribbontail removed her paw. Her sapphire eyes glistened with fear at Grasspaw's words. "Just stay awake a bit longer, my dear little brother," her eyes filled with tears at the old joke, but she blinked them away. She breathed in deeply, before touching Tansypaw's shoulder with her tail tip. "Tansypaw, stay with him, baby," she told her daughter. "I'm going to go to Jay's Hollow. I must fetch Dragonflydance." She brushed her cheek against both young cats' faces. The slender warrioress pelted from the camp, sailing over the river again. Her paws thudded the earth in a blur. How quick she was now was the difference between life and death for Grasspaw. tansypaw Tansypaw could sense her mother's fear. Her body trembled with the effort of not wailing. Fear engulfed her in an icy tide. What if Grasspaw died? She pressed closer to him, feeling his fluttering heartbeat. Panic swept through her body. He couldn't die, he just couldn't! She needed him! As Ribbontail stopped pressing the cobwebs to Grasspaw's wound, Tansypaw patted at his flank until she found the wound, and took over. She took deep breaths to control her terror. The ginger and white she-cat stared at her mother, her blind green eyes huge. She almost wanted to beg Ribbontail to stay, but she knew without Dragonflydance Grasspaw was sure to die. She nodded, her ears flat to her skull. Tansypaw heard her mother's pawsteps thunder the grass as she ran from the camp. She pressed her cheek to Grasspaw's. Be fast, mother, please be fast...

"Hurry, Sissy..." He was so exhausted. His head was spinning. The world was in odd colors. He couldn't trust them.
The tom looked over at the ginger and white femme and touched his nose to her muzzle, kissing it gently. "Thanks for being here..." He stretched and laid down, trying not to close his eyes. He was so close...so close to sleeping. It felt so warm and so relaxing just to close his eyes, but he forced his blue-green orbs open.

tansypaw The ginger and white she-cat began to lick Grasspaw's ears like a mother grooming her kit. Tears fell from her eyes into his fur, but she shook them away. The she-cat rested her head beside his, her tail draped over his back. "I won't ever leave you, Grasspaw," she murmured. "I love you, I really do. You'll be fine, I just know you will. Remember when we first met? I didn't want to talk to anyone, but you always made me feel better, even if I didn't want to feel better. You always make me feel better, Grasspaw, like no one else. It's just you." The words fell from her mouth in a rush, stumbling over one another. "I don't think I could live without you, so you can't leave me. Just keep your eyes open, just a bit longer. dragonflydance Her small paws thudded the hard earth. They felt sore and tender, but she carried on nonetheless, not dropping her speed. She screamed around a willow tree, her tail whipping at ferns with such force that they snapped in two. The medicine cat did not care what damage she did to herself, as long as she reached Grasspaw in time. The silvery river came into view, and Dragonflydance narrowed her beautiful blue eyes in determination. With a powerful leap, she launched herself over the circular band of water. She burst into the camp, thorns tearing at her white pelt. Dragonflydance ran to the prone form of Grasspaw. Tansypaw lay beside him. The medicine cat peeled back Ribbontail's clumsy poultice. She clucked her tongue urgently, before turning and running to her den to fetch the right herbs. She had to be quick. He had to survive. tansypaw The ginger and white she-cat jumped as she heard pawsteps, heavy on the grass outside the camp. Her heart tingled with fear - had Quetzal returned? Then the undergrowth crushed with a horrible wrenching, squeaking sound, and the soft, fragrant scent of Dragonflydance washed over her. The blind apprentice exhaled in relief, her green eyes wide. She sensed her aunt checking Grasspaw over, then running to her den. Tansypaw pressed her nose to her friend's back, alarmed at his faint heartbeat. "Just hold on a bit longer, Grasspaw," she whispered, her breath tickling his back.

dragonflydance The slim white she-cat heard Grasspaw's gasping breaths and quickened her pace. She scrabbled through her herbs, horrified to find several piles mixed together of the floor. She sifted through them urgently, until she had found the correct ones. She seized a swathe of fresh cobwebs on one paw and hobbled back to Grasspaw. The medicine cat nosed him to the grass, blocking his mouth with her tail. Alarm thundered through her heart as she noticed how misty his eyes were growing. She quickly pressed the cobwebs against the wound, her blue eyes determined. She could not let this apprentice die. She could feel Tansypaw's worry, pulsing out to her left. The she-cat began to bind up the wound with a poultice, though her heart was not in it. She was pretty sure whatever she did would not effect Grasspaw now.
His fate was in the paws of StarClan.

tansypaw Tansypaw's heart clouded with fear as Grasspaw got up. She had half a mind to call Dragonflydance. "You shouldn't be-" She stopped as Grasspaw touched her face. She blinked at him in confusion, her tail swishing across the earth. She frowned as her friend began to circle her. "Grasspaw...?" She turned her head to face him with startling accuracy. At his words, she ducked her head. Doubts filled her. She was still an apprentice. She wasn't supposed to have a mate. And she hated breaking rules. And was she... Was she really ready? tansypaw Though uncertainty still clouded her mind, Tansypaw allowed Grasspaw his last wish. When it was over, the ginger and white apprentice staggered to her paws. He was stumbling around. "No, Grasspaw," her voice trembled. At his last words, she blinked, then ran to him. She desperately pressed her nose into his fur. No heartbeat. She shook him like a ragdoll. Tears fell thick and fast into his fur. "No... No... No! No!" Tansypaw curled up around her friend, and mate's body, her face pressed into his still-warm fur. "Don't leave me, Grasspaw.. Y-you said... You s-said you wouldn't.." Her face was screwed up unattractively as she wailed and sobbed into his pelt, but she didn't care one bit. The only cat who had ever really understood her... He was gone. dragonflydance At the apprentices' words, Dragonflydance had padded to the nursery. She had noticed some of the queens and kits peering out. The two needed this moment to themselves. The slim white she-cat padded in. "Nothing to see," she mewed kindly, but firmly. As the cats dispersed, Rhymekit darting between Dragonflydance's paws, the medicine cat's blue eyes grew sorrowful. She was not at all sure Grasspaw would last the night. As she heard Tansypaw's shrieks, Dragonflydance turned and ran out of the nursery. She darted to the two apprentices, though she knew she was too late. Gently moving Tansypaw, she pressed her ear to Grasspaw's chest. He was dead. She shut her eyes in pain.
"Please, StarClan, recieve him well."

I will live by this code ___________Never surrender
"Don't cry, baby. I told I wasn't gonna leave you." Gray sparkles littered the air and wind whistled through the grass layering Grasspaw's deathbed. His spirit nestled against Tansypaw before jumping up gaily.
"Dragonflydance, could...could you ask Stormstar to give me my warrior name? I'll wait if I have to," the ghost murmured softly in the medicine cat's ear. Grass rustled through the camp as if stirred by a powerful gale.
"Tansypaw," Grasspaw said quietly. "It'll be just us soon, just me and you..."

Grasspaw was still here, whether they could see him moving or not. She felt his breath on her ear, and his whispered words. Because she could not hear him, Tansypaw continued to sob, until his presence hushed her loud wails. Tears still dripped down her cheeks in a steady flow, but she no longer screeched out loud. Dragonflydance gave a tiny nod, which she knew the blind apprentice would not be able to see. The medicine cat pressed her nose between her niece's ears. "It's okay, my darling," she murmured, eyes shutting. tansypaw
