Brokenskull blinked slowly as the fish bounced off of his shoulder, then his face split into his usual dopey grin. "You..caught it! And...I helped!" He meowed, jumping up and down excitedly. He sat down again and was silent for a few moments, while he occaisionally glanced at Haloheart. Eventually, he spoke. "Halo..Heart?" He meowed.

haloheart Haloheart tossed the fish into the water, where the sun caught it's silvery skin and it dazzled like the stars. Water droplets scattered everywhere, a few landing on Haloheart's face. Before today she would have flinched at that moment as though a wasp was circling her head; but now she just laughed. The small ginger tabby caught the fish in her mouth and placed it on a small, flattened bed of reeds. It looked regal, lying there like a meal waiting to be eaten.
Haloheart was enjoying herself thoroughly. Brokenskull's very presence seemed to make her relax. He was the only one who listened to her, didn't judge her, or mock her... The she-cat looked up, blue eyes bright, as the dark brown tabby spoke. "Yes?"

Brokenskull looked down at Haloheart, his hazel eyes large, round, and soft. "You're...my best friend...I like...you...very much." He meowed thumping his paws on the ground happily. He sat, jiggling his head, beaming down at Haloheart, and waiting for her reaction. It was true; he did like Haloheart very much. She had helped him at the battle, she always listened to him, even if it took him ages to finished what he was saying, and she seemed to care about him.

haloheart Haloheart's eyes grew warm as Brokenskull spoke. She padded to the tom and nudged his side, before sitting beside him. Her long, ginger striped tail lay over his, and she placed her small white paw over his much larger one. "You're my best friend, too, Brokenskull," she mewed, smiling. "And I like you very much." The she-cat nuzzled his side happily. She had never met a cat like Brokenskull before. Everybody thought him a complete bonehead, but they didn't know him. She resolved to seriously hurt the next cat that insulted her friend.
Haloheart imagined a future with the tom, despite her vow. It looked fairly bright. She knew there could be problems. How would Brokenskull react to kits? The ginger tabby knew that she was thinking much too far ahead, but she couldn't help it.

Brokenskull let out a loud, rumbling purr as Haloheart placed her paw on his. He looked down at her, with a serious expression on his face. "Halo...Heart, you know...that I won't...ever let....anything happen...to you...right?" He meowed. "I'll protect..you. If...anything tries to...hurt you...I'll....I'll....fight it." He finished, nodding vigorously. "Yup, yup...I will." He gently touched his nose to the she-cat's cheek.

haloheart The small ginger tabby smiled at her friend, but there was mischief in her sky blue eyes. She rose and padded away from him, to stand in front of him. "I think you'll find I can take care of myself," she smiled, flicking her ears. She padded past him, flicking his shoulder with her white tail tip as she passed. "Come on. We should probably get back to camp," she mewed. "The clan needs all the prey it can get." She gestured to the silvery body of the fish lying in the dry reeds surrounding the wide silver lake. "Can you carry that, please?" she asked, eyes bright. Haloheart padded into the shelter of the trees, her tail held high.
She was aware of trouble before she saw it, in the form of the rank stench of fox. Haloheart prowled round the corner. Her fur rose and a snarl swelled in her throat. The russet-red body of a fox leant over where she had buried the mouse. Nothing was left but bones. Haloheart tried to back into the bushes, but it turned it's slim muzzle, eyes gleaming, and began to advance on her Haloheart swallowed. "You want a fight, then come closer," she mewed , her voice slightly nervous.

Brokenskull smiled, "Ok...but in case...you ever can't...for some...reason...you've got...me." He meowed. He watched as the she-cat padded away, then he bent to pick up the fish. His ears pricked up as he heard Haloheart snarl. He lolloped over to her, and when he saw the fox he frowned. "Go..away!" He hissed at the thin red animal, before padding to Haloheart's side. "It...ate your...mouse! That's...mean...I don't...like it." His fur bristled, making him appear even more enormous. "I...want it...to go!" He stomped a paw angrily.

haloheart Haloheart bared her teeth as fox slunk ever closer. Her sky-blue eyes gleamed with fear and anger. As the large brown and white shape that was Brokenskull barreled out of the trees she froze. Haloheart stood in front of her friend, her fur bristling. She was remembering the terrifying experience of the battle, when Brokenskull had been badly injured. She couldn't risk that happening again. "Don't worry, Brokenskull," she mewed grimly. "I'll make it go away."
The small ginger tabby launched herself bodily at the fox. It rolled back it's lips, ears flat, white teeth bared. Haloheart struck out at it's yellow eyes with unsheathed silver claws. It moved it's head so that her claws scored it's cheek. It growled and buffeted the warrior with it's muzzle. Haloheart flailed with her claws, feeling them connect in it's chest.

Brokenskull watched, wide eyed, as Haloheart launched herself at the fox. He stood mewling nervously for a few moments, but when the fox knocked Haloheart with it's muzzle, he swiped at it with a huge paw. "No! You're...not allowed....to hurt...Haloheart!" He hissed, swishing his tail. "Go a...way!"

haloheart Haloheart pulled back, a graze on her cheek stinging. She could smell blood. She wasn't sure if it was her's or the fox's. The small ginger tabby she-cat opened her mouth in a hiss. Haloheart jumped onto the fox's back, sinking in her claws. It threw her off and bit her forepaw. The ginger tabby she-cat winced. She struggled to her paws as Brokenskull jumped at the fox. "No, Brokrnskull!" she yowled. She pushed forward, seizing the fox's head in her forepaws. She gave it a vicious shake. It yelped in confusion and pain. The fox struggled free, and Haloheart bit it's tail tip hard as it wheeled around. She watched it pelt into the undergrowth, bleeding and whining.
Haloheart sat back, gasping. She was bleeding on her cheek and her paw, but other than that she was alright. The small warrior joined Brokenskull, nudging her head beneath his chin. "Are you okay?" [/size]

Brokenskull watched as the fox retreated into the undergrowth, but turned to face Haloheart as she spoke. He tilted his head to one side. "I'm...ok if...you are." He meowed. He pressed his nose gently to her side. "I thought...I was going...to be the...one...protecting...you not the...other way...round." He wrapped his tail around the small she-cat as though he thought that would keep her safe.

haloheart As Haloheart stood there, sandwiched next to Brokenskull, something dawned on her. She didn't care that he wasn't exactly the cleverest cat in CloudClan. She didn't mind at all about his injury. He was her's. And she was his. They belonged together, like two pieces in a puzzle. She couldn't believe she hadn't seen it before. Everything she had felt for Eaglefeather rose again, only this time for Brokenskull. She pushed her brow against his strong chest. This was her chance. If it went wrong, she would probably never love again. She wasn't strong enough.
"Listen, Brokenskull," she mewed. "I really care about you. I don't care what everybody thinks." The small ginger tabby she-cat swallowed, her sky blue eyes uncertain. "I love you, okay?"

Brokenskull purred as Haloheart brushed against his chest, and gently licked her ear. He tilted his head to one side as she spoke. He swallowed, feeling confusing emotions pumping through him. At the she-cat's last sentence, the massive tom sat for a while, blinking, as it sunk in, then he looked down at Haloheart, his eyes soft and slightly damp. He nudged her shoulder gently with a large paw, then spoke. "I....I....love you...too....Halo...Heart." He meowed. "You're...always so nice...to me...and you don't...talk to me like...I'm a...dumb dumb....and I want....to be with you...forever...and ever...and ever."

haloheart The sight was odd. A small, slender ginger tabby she-cat, bleeding in a couple of places, pressed against a much larger brown and white tom. Haloheart smiled at his words, but said nothing herself. She was glad that they had chosen to go into the forest. She was even glad that they had met the fox. Without that danger, she wouldn't have been prompted to blurt out her feelings. She had a mate now. Brokenskull. And she didn't care what anybody thought. She thought sneeringly of the she-cat's who looked for only appearance in a tom. We'll show them.
Haloheart slipped away from her mate and sat down, licking her cuts clean. When she was done she stood again, shaking herself lightly. "Should we head back to camp?" she asked. If you hadn't known her before this moment, you would not notice anything different about her. But had you known her before the conversation she had just shared with Brokenskull, you would notice the new look of affection in her eyes as she looked at her newfound mate.

Brokenskull watched Haloheart cleaning herself, his eyes bright, and an even bigger smile than usual on his face. He continued to look at his mate with dopey affection as she spoke. He nodded, "Yeah...we've been gone...for ages! Do...you think they...missed us?" He replied, brushing his large head against Haloheart's side. "I bet...they missed...you...because when...you're not here...I miss you...lots and...lots." The enormous tom paused. "Halo...Heart? Will...you promise...to stay with...me forever....and ever...and ever? And...ever?" He asked, his hazel eyes huge.

haloheart The small ginger tabby she-cat smiled, her sky blue eyes happy. "I'm sure they did," she mewed gently. Haloheart shook herself. The wounds had stopped bleeding now, but they still stung vaguely. She padded to her mate and nudged his shoulder gently. "I promise," she murmured. The small warrior then picked up the fish in her mouth. She gestured to the mouse with her nose, so that Brokenskull would understand to carry it.
Haloheart's paws carried her back through the forest. Her ginger striped fur was already beginning to dry after her swim due to the heat from the sun above. She was thinking, her heart buoyed up by blissful happiness. She had broken her oath, but she didn't care. She had thought that love only brought pain, but it didn't. She could see it now. She just had to find the right cat. And she had. Brokenskull. She loved him, no matter what. She didn't care what anybody thought. Hailthunder would probably tease her, but she truly didn't give a mousetail. She had Brokenskull, and he was all she needed.

Brokenskull giggled joyfully at Haloheart's words, then followed after her as she headed back through the forest. As he ran, his head filled with slightly jumbled, but happy thoughts. He would spend his life with his tiny little mate, who he adored. He would do everything he could to make her happy. Whatever she wanted, he would get for her. He smiled lopsidedly, content.
