Green eyes passed through a luxurious curtain of willow fronds. Blinking, an orange and white body followed, hopping onto a large boulder for a moment. She rubbed her scent onto the boulder for a moment before hopping back onto her large paws. Runningcloud yawned widely and turned back to Octoberlies, Willowkit, and Pansypaw. An expanse of mint lay beyond the rock Runningcloud perched on. "This is catmint," she explained to Willowkit. "Anytime someone has greencough, you can get this for them along with feverfew. If they have a bellyache, watermint can help them, but that's a ways off."
Pansypaw buried her nose into the mint and blinked, feeling dizzy for a moment. She fell onto her rear, shaking her head to get rid of the stars. The mandarin apprentice rubbed her pink nose and glanced up at Willowkit and Runningcloud. "Should we take some back to your den?" The medicine cat nodded.

The willow trees. Willowkit loved them. When she used to sneak out of camp, she enjoyed playing with the leaves since they fell off of their branches so easily. Their colors changed but it was less noticable then a maple or birch. In her eyes, the trees reminded her of sadness or even tears. They reminded her of herself, and not because of her name, but because of the way she felt sometimes. Like she wanted to just lay down and cry forever. Today, Willowkit didn't have any time to play in the willow trees. She was on a mission to show Runningcloud that she wasn't just a stick in the sand. She followed her apprentice at her heels and stopped beside her when she found an herb that Willowkit knew the smell of. She just couldn't place the name. Catmint. That was it. She had never had catmint and she hoped to never have it. She smelled it and when Pansypaw inhaled a bit too much, Willowkit flicked her eye and gave Runningcloud a sideways glance. Then, Willowkit gathered a bundle of the minty herb and put it at her paws, ready for her next command.

Runningcloud nodded approvingly to Willowkit. "However, today, we're going to be looking at poisonous plants today. For example, kex, as the ancestors called it, is now called hemlock," the medicine cat said, pointing to the tall plant off to the left that was hidden in the shadow of a ditch. "While you can use it for arthritic purposes, the line between good and bad with hemlock is very slim. In short, avoid it. If you crush it, it smells like mouse and young apprentices or warriors might be hasty and bite down. Before you know it, you're a dead cat. However, don't get it confused with fennel, which you can use for chills, stomachaches, or breathing problems you may get." The tabby dismounted the boulder, circling the hemlock carefully for the moment.
Pansypaw sneezed and rubbed her nose again, following Runningcloud. She sniffed at the hemlock, only to have her head clocked by the medicine cat. "Owwww!" she whined.
"Did I not just say avoid this plant, Pansypaw?" Runningcloud barked, eyes narrowed.
Pansypaw's eyes widened and she gulped. "Yes, Runningcloud," she meeped, flattening out her tangerine body under the stern green eyes of the broad she-cat. "Sorry..."
Runningcloud scowled at the ginger apprentice and turned to Willowkit. "Alright, so what're these plant called and what are their properties?" she asked for review of the catmint and hemlock.

// Why are you still calling Willowkit Willow'kit'? She should be Willow'paw'. She's an apprentice. oo;
Octoberlies cheerfully trailed the three she-cats, steps faltering. He still limped heavily on his hind legs, but his confidence was returning rapidly. The slender tabby staggered in Runningcloud's shadow quite happily, reminisicing about the days of his apprenticeship. But then he had met Butterflypaw, and it had all gone wrong. He sighed, leaf hued eyes shifting to the sky. The branches cut across the blue expanse, causing shadows to slash across Octoberlies' back. The young warrior remembered his kits; Hollykit, Barrenkit, Barleykit, Treekit and of course, Hyenakit. He assumed that Barrenkit, Barleykit and Treekit were all dead, like their mother. Hollykit had died of Greencough on only her second moon of life; only Hyenakit had survived. Octoberlies found himself wondering whether he could ever tell his hotheaded child of his parentage; probably not. The truth was, he was too cowardly.

((^^;; Because we haven't gone to Moonshard yet. I thought she wasn't given an apprentice name until StarClan accepted her as medicine cat apprentice. Broomish, do you want to do that after we finish this thread?))

Willowkit listened very closely to what her mentor said, repeated it in her head over and over so she would remember what it was. She watched as Pansypaw got too close to the hemlock and got clonked in the head by Runningcloud. It almost made her smile but she held back and looked down at the catmint, admiring its leaves and it's faint smell. But the properties of hemlock and catmint ran through her head constantly for she would be ready in case of a review. And she was glad she was when the question was directed toward her.
"Catmint is used to treat greencough along with feverfew. Hemlock, or hex as the ancestors called it, is a poisonous herb that smells like mouse and it is sometimes used to help arthritic problems but it's dangerous. And don't get it confused with fennel." Willowkit added the last sentence quickly and looked up from the catmint, smiling for once in a while.

"Correct," Runningcloud said approvingly, dipping her head. She turned back to Octoberlies, eyebrows raised. "Is something wrong, Octoberlies? You're quiet..."
Pansypaw rubbed her head and swallowed a pang of jealousy at Runningcloud's approving nod towards Willowkit. It seemed that her curiosity always got her in trouble.

Brindletalon ran along quickly, his mouth open as he followed the scents of Runningcloud, Octoberlies, Pansypaw and Willowkit. Brindle legs stretched as he galloped along until suddenly he came upon the four cats. He skidded to a halt, bringing up a cloud of dust as he did. "Runningcloud!", he gasped breathlessly "Firestar of MoonClan has come to our camp. She's very confused and doesnt seem to know where she is or who anyone is or well anything. Shes had a memory lapse we think" he finished, still panting hard for breath. He flashed a quick smile at Octoberlies and sat down for a moment as he fought to catch his breath.

"Firestar?" Runningcloud demanded, broad shoulders raising high as the former deputy came to her feet. The medicine cat frowned and turned to Willowkit and Pansypaw, making a quick decision.
"Pansypaw, you stay with Octoberlies. Brindletalon, take a rest before you go running off again. Willowkit, let's go," the large tabby growled. Ignoring all protocol because she needed to hurry, Runningcloud's maw clamped around Willowkit as if the young she-cat was her daughter and bounded off, paws pounding the earth.

Brindletalon dipped his head to the medicine cat. He looked around at the other two cats who he was with. "Shall we follow them? Just walking though please, im exhausted" he smiled, although he also wanted to go slowly for Octoberlies. He knew his friend wasnt 100% better yet. He nodded at Panyspaw and Octoberlies. "Lets go then. Pansypaw did Runningcloud want any herba brought back with her because we could take some back for her" he said, pausing for a minute to let the apprentice reply.

Now it was ruined. At the sound of Brindletalon approaching, Willowkit shied off behind the hemlock just incase on an intruder but as the mottled colored tom appeared, her excited smile of actually getting something right died into a frown. Her shoulders slumped and she dropped her head down. As she listened she got confused but was also mad. Mad because she was finally training and now it was ruined. When Runningcloud was finished giving orders, she picked Willowkit up in her mouth like a mother would do. The small gray she-cat let out a small squeal as the bounded away. This made her feel like a kit. Like she couldn't run for herself. And how she hated it.

Pansypaw looked thoughtful for a moment as she turned to Brindletalon. "Um, just the catmint for the moment. We were doing poisonous plants today," the apprentice said, nodding to Willowkit's pile of catmint. "Octoberlies was just walking with us. I'll take the catmint home if you want to keep Octoberlies company. I know the way home from here."

Brindletalon nodded and let Pansypaw lead the way. He walked beside Octoberlies, going at his friends pace as he knew it must be tiring for the tom to be out and have to hurryu after his spell in the medicine cat den. He sighed and swished his tail anxiously. ooc: Post again in camp
