Runningcloud stood at the border of SerenityClan pensively, gazing across at the BrightClan side. Fireflies danced around her face like kittens at play. Slowly, silvery forms took their place. The large deputy narrowed her eyes, staring deeply into them. One form touched her nose and she felt warmth surging from the touch.
The orange tabby was fiercely interrupted by the song of cats screeching along with the reeking scream of a Monster. "Runningcloud!" she heard her name yowled. Morninghawk! Thrushstar's head and another unnamed warrior popped up beside her, meowing for help. "I'm coming, Thrushstar!" Runningcloud howled helplessly, bounding after the Monster.
The creature zoomed away faster than the deputy could even think of chasing. "Oh StarClan, what shall I do?" Runningcloud wept, feeling useless.
"You shall become medicine cat in Morninghawk's place. We shall care for her and the stolen BrightClanners in another place. Seek us, Runningcloud," the silvery kitten beside her said, its voice echoing.
"I am no medicine cat! I have no qualities, no training!" Runningcloud protested. "I am SerenityClan's deputy! Jasminestar's needs me! Emberpaw needs me!"
"We need you," the kitten said authoratively. "And I will tell Jasminestar this myself. Go back and give her the news. StarClan will help BrightClan choose their leader on our own."
Runningcloud nodded tiredly and began padding back to camp in tears, an odd thing coming from the broad-shouldered grandmotherly warrior. "Jasminestar!" she called for her leader. The kitten followed by her side. By the warriors passing her, the deputy thought she was the only one who could see the StarClanner. "Jasminestar!" she meowed again.

Brindletalon glanced up from beside Pastelsky to watch Runningcloud come into camp crying. "Is Runningcloud crying? Wonder what twisted her tail" he whispered. He was going to go and see if the deputy was alright but as she was looking for Jasminestar he decided to leave her alone. God, today had been a hard day.

Jasminestar was dozing off in her den when she heard Runningcloud call. She slowly opened her eyes. The desperation in Runningcloud's voice made her stand up and hurry out the den. She ran toward her deputy, skidding at her feet. Are you all right? What's happened?

Faint silver light made a corona around Runningcloud as she struggled to regain her voice. "Jasminestar...I...," she began. The deputy was heartbroken as she relayed what she had seen to her leader. "Ghostlywind was there with me at the border to get Murdercalling and that stupid Monster took him, I mean, Thrushstar a-a-and Morninghawk! And StarClan came--."
She gestured to the glowing kitten following her. "They kept saying I should become medicine cat in Morninghawk's place, but Jasminestar, I don't think I'm right for that. I honor StarClan with all of my heart, but I don't know if this is the way." The large deputy inhaled deeply and stared at her paws. "Jasminestar, what should we do? If StarClan wishes for me to become a medicine cat, I will go, but you will have to choose another deputy in my place. I am a war cat, Jasminestar. That is why I question this..."

Jasminestar turned her head away. All the new news was rushing in, it was hard to take. Morninghawk? Dead? Her eyes clouded. Already her judgement seemed to falter in her eyes. She turned to where the kitten stood. She could only see a shimmery waver in the air, but she could feel the kitten's presense. She could her whispers in her ear, the voices of Starclan. Something in her mind clicked. Her body turned ridged, and she spoke in a shakey voice. Starclan..they whisper...you are right. It was your destiny all along. She sighed, and relaxed again. For the hour you have been so, you were a faithful deputy. But now you must go onto your real destiny. She sighed once more. But how am I supposed to tell the clan? I guess I'll have to tell the truth. [/blockquote]

Mouseclaw passed by Brindletalon and stopped next to him. "What's going on?" He asked, brushing his friend's pelt. He noticed Jasminestar, who looked as if she was in shock, or at least distant. And Runningcloud, who looked as if she had been crying. He tilted his head puzzledly, awaited his answer.

Snowflake showed up just as Runningcloud came. She looked around in despair, praying that this didn't happen. Maybe it was a dream. OH she hoped so.

Runningcloud inhaled deeply. "She wasn't dead when they grabbed her, but she was taken by Two-legs and they'll give her to a cutter. I've seen what they do to kittypets!" the deputy meowed frantically. She mentally hit herself. Get control. Get control!
She gazed at Jasminestar's majestic eyes. "Tell them what happened. Name a new deputy in my stead. I will go to the Sacred Places to share tongues with StarClan, to see if this is my destiny. I will return a medicine cat or not at all." She gave the she-cat a tired smile. "May I choose two cats for my journey?" She glanced warmly and tiredly at Mouseclaw and Brindletalon, who stood outside.

Mouseclaw stared at Runningcloud. "Medicine cat, what?" He was very, very confused. But he felt stronger than he had last night, and he wanted to help. "I'll go, if you would like me to." He could feel the exhiliration building up inside him. Another trip! He loved just patrolling- and he hoped Pastelsky or Brindletalon would be the other one to come. If he did go, he reminded himself.

Oh the horror of losing cats. Especially one so important to the clan. Morninghawk couldn't have been taken. Snowflake just walked away, shaking her head.

Brindletalon touched noses with his friend warmly. "How are you feeling? And no idea im just as confused as you are" he said, brushing his tail against Mouseclaws shoulder. He looked up at Runningcloud. "I would accompany you as well if you wanted" he said, blinking slowly as he thought about the morning, when him and Mouseclaw had joked with Runningcloud. All that semed so far away now...

Jasminestar narrowed her eyes at the two warriors that approached, then turned back to Runningcloud. Alright, if this is what must be. Standing up straighter, she resumed a determined look and stalked back toward High Rock. She leapt up top and let out a yowl. All Clanners come forward! When the cats had gathered around her, she began to talk in a loud voice. I have recieved a surprising shock from Runningcloud. Thrushstar and Morninghawk have been hit by Monsters. She paused for a moment. The Twolegs in the Monsters have taken them away. She turned her face away, trying to hide her pain. [/blockquote]

Runningcloud nodded sadly, hanging her head. Her great shoulders slumped and she huddled near Brindletalon and Mouseclaw. "You bear a great burden journeying with me. You have earned my rare respect," she said quietly before returning her ears to Jasminestar.
"I would like to hear my replacement before I leave, if I may, Jasminestar!" she called out, smiling weakly.

Snowflake stepped forward towards her leader, her head hanging. She couldn't believe what had happened. Oh, if only Morninghawk could get back somehow! But she knew it was too late. Snowflake scuffed the ground with her paw and looked up at her leader, grief shining in her eyes.

Jasminestar turned back, her eyes clear once more. Nodding slowly to Runningcloud, she boomed in a loud voice that quivered. Runningcloud has heard a calling from Starclan. They have told her she is to become medicine cat. She pawwed the edge of High Rock. So now I must announnce the new deputy. She paused. The new deupty shall be Clearpool! [/blockquote]

Runningcloud turned, looking for Clearpool. "Clearpool! Clearpool!" she chanted, beckoning the others to do the same. A sonorous thunderbolt cracked across the sky as if scolding her for waiting. Runningcloud glanced at Jasminestar and bowed her head.
"StarClan walks with me now. Mouseclaw, Brindletalon, let's go!" she called. The mighty ginger tabby nodded to her Clan with a brief meow before trotting off.

Snowflake chanted Clearpool's name and turned to see Runningcloud pass her. She brushed her tail against the medicine cat's shoulder, as to give her strength. "Good luck," She murmured to the medicine cat.

~Clearpool~ Clearpool looked up in surprise at the announcement that she was to be deputy. Her clear blue eyes flickered with worry for a moment, she didnt think she could ever meet the standards that Runningcloud set in her short time as deputy. She dipped her head to Jasminestar and then looked around at everyone with a beautifully heart shaped face. Her long snowy white pelt moved silkily against her as she shifted slightly. She smiled at Runningcloud, Mouseclaw and Brindletalon as they left, sending a glance of good luck their way. ~Brindletalon~ Brindletalon quickly chanted along with the rest. "Clearpool, Clearpool!". He then smiled at Runningcloud as she praised both him and Mouseclaw, his eyes shining with pride. He respected Runningcloud a lot. Brindletalon dipped his head to Jasminestar and Clearpool and swiftly followed Runningcloud out of camp, Mouseclaw at his side.

Mouseclaw grinned at Clearpool and chanted with the other Clanners breifly, knowing the problem ahead was urgent. He nodded at Runningcloud, and turned to leave. Before he did, something made him stop and look around for Pastelsky, who he hadn't seen in ages. Her farmiliar pelt was nowhere to be seen. Now with a hint of worry in his green orbs, he turned to leave again, and this time, he did. His paws thudded heavily, and he couldn't seem to take the pretty she-cat out of his mind. Was she alright? He shook his head and focused on the task ahead, on getting Runnincloud to share tounges with StarClan and back safely.

Pastelsky watched in despair as the message was announced : Morninghawk was gone. And Runningwind was to be medicine cat? That made no sense. But, then again, everything had felt like a dream since... She shook her head, smiling, and padded over to where Mouseclaw's gray tail was just flicking out of camp. Sighing, she sat down and began washing herself. She had never done well in large crowds of cats, and s she decided to congratulate Clearpool later, personally. Clearpool looked quite uncertian right about now, but then again, who wouldn't? As much as Pastelsky wanted to fall asleep by the thorn tunnel and wait for Mouseclaw's return, something made her pick her way across camp again, this time to sit by Octoberlies. "Octoberlies?" she mewed quietly, giving her friend a lick on the ear. He couldn't leave her - not yet, when she needed him most. She knew she had her other friends, too, like Snowflake and Brindletalon, but... She blinked back tears and focused herself on Octoberlies's faint breaths.

A ruffled, anxiety-ridden gray tomcat pushed himself into the medicine cat's den. His eyes were glazed in worry, and his fur was on end. His pelt prickled in readiness for what he might see- but it was better than he'd hoped.
The beautiful, slender she-cat was bent over their friend Octoberlies, murmuring softly to him. But Mouseclaw wasn't jealous or even thinking he should be- a faint whisper escaped his trembling lips, as he shook in happiness. "Pastelsky.."
He felt a tear of relief fall to the dusty ground, and he collapsed against her, breathing in her wonderful, sweet scent and trying to forget that Octoberlies lay on the brink of death. Gray and brown muddled together as he looked into her green eyes. "Is he- going to be okay?" He meowed, trying to seem as if he was shrugging off the fact he was laying against her warm body.
