"Is that you, Midmightsky?" snarled Halopaw, lifting her head, her shoulders bristling. "I thought I told you to leave me alone!" She then realized the voice was female, a voice she recognised from long ago. She got to her paws and dashed over to her mother, curling up and burying her muzzle in the white cat's fur. "Mamma!" she sobbed, feeling like a wretched kit once again.

Icelily gently licked her daughter's head. "What's wrong, my dear?" she meowed, in a honey-like voice.

Halopaw sobbed, burying her forehead in her mother's chest. As she cried, she was aware she had to tell her mother something. She looked at her paws, desperately trying to think up a convincing story in her head. She could not tell her mother about Eaglefeather; she was sure the white warrior would tell Cormorantstar, who would probably punish the dark tabby. Sharp claws seemed to be digging into her heart. She so wanted revenge on Eaglefeather, but her own, personal revenge. She wanted to squeeze every last drop of blood he had in his body free, and humilate him as much as possible. She wanted to sink her teeth into his fur, to shake him from side to side, to rip him and tear him and taste his blood. And she wouldn't giving that stupid Midnight a good claw-up, too. "I..." she stammered. "I did something stupid." She mewed, buying for time.

"What's wrong?" she asked.

"I... I was out hunting with Eaglefeather," she sobbed. "And I think I offended him. I said he was completely mouse-brained 'cos he nearly walked right into a fox's den. He nearly clawed me." She weaved the story in her mind, letting the words spill from her mouth. She hoped it sounded convincing enough.

"Oh Halopaw," she purred. "You were always like that. But that's not the whole story. If I know you well enough, and I do, then I know that wouldn't trouble you as much." she meowed, licking her on the head.
