Orochipaw leaped from rock to rock, waiting for his best friend. When he reached the water, he looked at his reflection. What he saw there reasurred him. It was a tom who could face anything with his best friend at his side. The tom stood and faced the driection he came, waiting for her. They had been through so much, and Jaguarstrike's death had been the bond that they made to become best friends. Orochipaw knew if she would die, it would be him who had defended her, and he would be lying beside her, his blood running with hers, as they both would die together. Life and death, it's friendship that they needed, and if he were seperated from her, he knew he would die inside.

A dark shadow darted after Orochipaw. Ravenpaw's long, smoky fur streamed out behind her as the cold breeze cut into her skin. The she-cat looked up at the bleak grey sky, the snow spiralling from the heavens. Her ice blue eyes were confused with emotion; sadness, worry, jealousy. Never had there been such a churning mix. The black apprentice's eyes followed the shape of her friend as he halted beside the water. Ravenpaw trotted to join him, dipping her nose into the water. The coldness made her shiver, but felt good against her skin. Ravenpaw gave a long sigh as she withdrew, shaking the moisture from her nose. The she-cat then leant against Orochipaw, reassured by the warmth of his pelt against her's.

As the she-cat leaned against him, he let out a purr of reasurrance. What's wrong? He asked, feeling her tense muscles as she leaned against him. Somehow, he could always tell when there was something wrong with her. It was an instinct. After all, she was his best friend.

Ravenpaw sighed, falling into a sitting position. Her head rested on Orochipaw's shoulder, her cheek brushing the soft fur of his shoulder. The shadow pelted apprentice blinked her ice blue eyes, peering out at the clear water. Frost played at the edges of the water, but the centre was running fresh and cold. Ravenpaw flicked her long, feathery black tail as she thought about how to answer the tom's question. "I..." she murmured, her voice quiet in her throat. The sound of it made her wince. She remembered her kit days. She had always been sensible and cautious... Frostpaw had often become frustrated with her. But she'd always had Orochipaw. Ravenpaw swallowed. "I don't know. I just feel... Feel worthless." The apprentice sighed as she admitted her feelings. It felt like tearing out a piece of her heart and throwing it on show.

If part of her heart had been taken out and thrown, he would have caught it and kept it for her. Oh Ravenpaw, why? I mean, you have Frostpaw, you have me, you have Moonclan. Why do you feel worthless? He turned his head and licked her cheek gently. My friend, please, tell me why you feel this way. He smiled gently at her, and followed her gaze to the water. It was breath-taking. Frost glimmered on the river like charcoal, for it was not very thick. A black current swept away the frost. It seemed like a promise from Starclan, showing the two staying best friends for their entire lives.

Ravenpaw looked at her paws, biting back the tears that threatened to overflow. She raised her head so that her clear, ice-blue eyes fixed onto Orochipaw's. "Because Frostpaw is better than me," she said. The words were thick with bitterness and moons of jealousy. "I know it's stupid and selfish to be jealous, but... She's better at hunting and fighting, she can keep her emotions in check, she's fun to be around, everyone likes her..." Ravenpaw stared into the water before her, her eyes following the circular ripples that the minnows made. She swung her tail slowly to and fro, hoping the movement would distract her from her pain and misery.

He wrapped his tail around her, and pressed against her side. But she's not a better friend. I mean, do you see her hanging out with one cat all the time? Or is she jumping from cat to cat? We have eachother, and in my eyes, you'll always be better than Frostpaw. He purred comfortingly to her. He meant every word he said, and his eyes sparkled with the long friendship the two cats held.

Ravenpaw sighed, her shoulders drooping. She blinked, still staring into the fathomless grey water. The black apprentice thought back to all the times Orochipaw had been there for her, even when they were tiny kits. Frostkit had always had more friends then her, even then. She'd been shy, and taken the snide comments about her dead father to heart. Only Orochikit had liked her, he was the only one, other than Frostkit, who would talk to her without sneering. Ravenpaw had a sniff as these memories thrust themselves into the forefront of her mind. "But... I'm scared," she murmured, not knowing or caring if Orochipaw heard or not. In fact, she half-hoped he hadn't.

I will be here for you always. He licked her ears and smiled gently. Together, we will prove to all the cats that we are more than worthless apprentices. Anyway, I'm sure Firestar's going to make us warriors soon. He meowed. You're my best friend, and no cat could ever change that.
