In this farewell There’s no blood There’s no alibi ‘Cause I’ve drawn regret From the truth Of a thousand lies
Shakenleaf bounded into the clearing, walked a few steps until he was a few badger-lengths from the pool, at which point he sat and fliicked his tail, waiting for Ravenpaw to catch up. He blinked slowly, trying not to breathe in the musty, yeasty smell of the dry pool.
So let mercy come And wash away What I’ve done
His mind sprouted an idea, which would only work if his apprentice was curious enough. He smiled and quickly went to the pool, checking for any prey. A young water-vole was by the very edge and didn't notice him. He stepped back and sat again, praying to StarClan that Ravenpaw would arrive quietly. This could be her first catch.
I’ve faced myself To cross out what I’ve become Erase myself And let go of what I’ve done
Put to rest What you thought of me Well I cleaned this slate With the hands Of uncertainty

Ravenpaw trotted after Shakenleaf, her plumy, coal coloured tail held erect ver her back. Her dark blue eyes gleamed in the sunlight as she stepped into the clearing. She spotted the dusty bed were the pool would've been, a small, dirty trickle of water. She crouched as she spotted a ater vole at the edge of the tiny pool of water. She dug her hooked silver claws into the dusty earth. She didn't know what to do. The apprentice backed away and looked at her paws.

So let mercy come And wash away What I’ve done
I’ve faced myself To cross out what I’ve become Erase myself And let go of what I’ve done
For what I’ve done I’ll start again And whatever pain may come Today this ends I’m forgiving what I’ve done
Shakenleaf nodded quickly to his disgruntled apprentince, his dark lips folding into an effortless smile. "Go on," he whispered. "Its alright." The water vole was still there, sniffing. If Ravenpaw didn't hurry, it'd be gone. He steadied his breathing so it couldn't be detected by the prey, and stiffened.
I’ve faced myself To cross out what I’ve become Erase myself And let go of what I’ve done
What I’ve done Forgiving what I’ve done

"What do I do?" Ravenpaw sounded worried. She scented the impatience coming off her mentor, and frowning, she stalked forwards. She pounced much to early. The vole darted into the reeds. Ravenpaw's forepaws splashed in the wet mud on the bank. She shook the mud from her paws, burning with shame. "Sorry," she mewed, sounding crestfallen.

When youre on a holiday You can't find the words to say All the things that come to you And I wanna feel it too
On an island in the sun Well be playing and having fun And it makes me feel so fine I can't control my brain
Shakenleaf shook his head at her. "No, I should've waited until I'd instructed you. That was my fault. Anyway, this is the Dry Bones Pool, named for an obvious reason. The highest the water gets is in the winter. There canbe prey found here, but you'll get dirty." He flicked his tail lightly on her shoulder, motioning for her to follow him. They were making great progress, one more place and then they'd return to camp. And to Firestar. He grinned as he stepped along the dry, dusty earth, his heart as light as ever.
When youre on a golden sea You don't need no memory Just a place to call your own As we drift into the zone
On an island in the sun Well be playing and having fun And it makes me feel so fine I can't control my brain

Ravenpaw nodded, trying to print the imformation firmly in her mind. She didn't want to forget any of the things Shakenleaf was telling her. She wondered why Shakenleaf seemed so very happy. Perhaps he was just enjoying having an apprentice. She doubted it; she wasn't exactly much of a catch.
