A tortoiseshell padded through the long grass in the moonlit hills. Scorchedleaf remembered this place from when he was younger. He and Silentsong would come here to talk, and relax. Oh, those moonlit trips at night. I should take Sorrowfrost here, so she can see where her mother was happy. He sat down, looking at the stars in the dark sky. Silentsong, are you up there, watching me? He sat there for quite a bit, then put his head down because his neck hurt from staring at stars for a long time. He got up and wandered away from the hills, no destination.

A silver figure crept through the dark, skeletal undergrowth, jaws parted to scent her full surroundings. She had caught nothing as of yet; the prey all seemed to be deep in their burrows for the night. Dovefeathers was certainly thinking they had the right idea, as she padded out of the cover of the trees and towards the hills. The grass felt springy beneath her pads. The silver tabby she-cat shivered as a chilling wind swept up and over the hill Dovefeathers was slowly climbing. She hadn't been able to sleep- she had been too busy thinking about her brother and his mate, turning up in camp so recently. She unsheathed her claws and slashed at the earth for a moment, pulling hunks of grass from the rain soaked ground. She stopped after a minute, padding onwards. Suddenly, she spied a figure. This figure became clearer as she got closer. It was a Clanmate; Scorchedleaf. She raised her tail and mewed a greeting to the tortoiseshell tom.

Scorchedleaf looked up from where he was wandering. 'Why hello there, Dovefeathers. What seems to be troubling you?' His husky mew carried across from where he was to where she was. He went over to her and sat down. He looked up at the sky yet again. Where are you, Silentsong? He looked back at Dovefeathers. 'What brings you to this part of the territory?' He felt the breeze at it ruffled his dense winter coat. He looked at the she, as he waited to see if she would answer his questions.

Dovefeathers bounded over to Scorchedleaf, smiling. 'Hello. Lots of things trouble me, I just don't show it too often.' she said mysteriously, slowing to a halt and watching her own breath rise in clouds into the night sky. 'I suppose I'm just... confused about my brother, and his mate showing up in camp. It's just, he looked like he expected me to be all happy and excited to see him, like nothing had ever happened between us.' she said, shaking her head slowly from side to side. 'I like coming over the hills to think, because it feels like StarClan is so much closer up here.' she said, then noticed how trivial she sounded.

'Ah, that would be confusing. Secretcalling's your brother? Wow, did you miss him all his time?' He looked at her as he tried to tink of any siblings. He all of a sudden unburied a long ago memory. 'Whoa! I just had this memory of me seeing an unfamiliar cat pick me up as a kit and leave me... here. Must have been a dream.' He suddenly felt unsettled. Why was he out of the camp as a kit? Was he really clanborn, or did his clan just find him and accept him like he is now? Has his life been all a lie?

Dovefeathers looked down, and shuffled her paws. 'No, I didn't miss him. Because he ran off with an EclipseClanner, and ignored our parents when they needed him the most. I never forgave him for that.' she said sadly. She looked up as Scorchedleaf spoke again. 'Don't you remember your kithood?' she asked incredulously, remembering when Scorchedleaf had been found in Clan territory, and had been taken back to camp to suckle with a queen.

'I remember Roseflower, my mother, and my denmates. That's about it. I remember all the times she let us go play out then we would get in trouble. ah, the life of kit hood.' He searched her face. Something was wrong. 'Maybe that dream, wasn't just a dream... But Roseflower would never just leave me here to die!' He stared astonished at Dovefeathers, then shook his head. 'It can't be true, it just can't be true.' He shuffled his paws, and stared at te sky, this time trying to find the little dot of Roseflower to comfort him. He knew he would never find her, yet he felt reassured in a weird way when he looked at the sky.

Dovefeathers, normally being a cat that liked to give good news, wasn't too keen on reminding Scorchedleaf of his past. 'Scorchedleaf... before you were a MoonClanner, you were found as a kit, in MoonClan territory. Roseflower was your foster mother.' she said, then hesitated before adding. 'This doesn't make you any less of a MoonClan cat than me, or even Firestar, because you're loyal to MoonClan, and that's all that matters.' she said quickly.

His eyes stared blankly at her. His life had been one big lie. He felt clanborn, yet his own mother did not want him. His voice, empty of emotion, spoke. 'Thank you, Dovefeathers, for telling me of my real past.' Suddenly realizing, he cried, 'But Firestar wasn't always a Moonclanner! How should that comfort me? You, maybe, but Firestar wasn't always a Moonclanner... like me... oh... I get it, you named her for that. Okay, that makes sense now. Sorry, I didn't mean to cry out at you. Really, I'm sorry. I am loyal, but does everyone still see me as that loner kit whose own mother abandoned him?' He thought about it for a minute, then mewed, 'Roseflower was more of a mother to me than my own mother. And if I ever come across her again, I'll let her know that abandoning me was the best thing she's ever done for me!'

Dovefeathers sat and waited as Scorchedleaf took it all in. 'It's okay, I was just using Firestar as an example, to show that you don't have to be Clan born to achieve great things. And, no, the Clan don't still see you as that kit. Because you've made more of yourself, and you're a real help to the Clan. I know you're going to feel a bit disorientated at the moment, but you have to realise that Roseflower loved you like one of her own kits, and that'll never change.' she said, pretty impressed by her speech. Scorchedleaf looked at her with warmth in his eyes. She understood how he felt. He was surprised at how someone voiced his feelings. No one has ever done that.'You know why I was able to make something of myself? It was because in my heart, I was clanborn. Knowing this, it will only make me more loyal. Then, I can become the most trusted warrior! Yay!' Scorchedleaf looked excited. deep down, he knew he would never become the most trusted warrior, yet giving himself a goal to work for would make him a better warrior in time.

[] Dovefeathers smiled at Scorchedleaf, then shivered as something freezing hit her between the eyey. She looked up and saw a flurry of snowflakes making their way to the ground. Dovefeathers shivered as the snowflakes melted into icey drops of water on her pelt, and she looked back at the tortoiseshell tom. 'Wanna head back to camp?' she asked, twitching her tail slightly in the cold.

Scorchedleaf looked up, then felt a snowflake hit his nose. He licked it off and looked at Dovefeathers. 'Good idea!' He started to walk back to the camp. Scorchedleaf looked back, and to his amazement, saw a quick flash of a pelt. It was Silentsong, waiting for him to return to this place with his head full of thoughts.
